Prepare for Potential Loss of Water Service and Boil Water Order

Wednesday, September 1, 2010, at 11:00 pm repairs will be made to a break on the

watermain that feeds the City of Auburn’s water storage facility. The City will try to
repair the watermain without shutting down water service. If this is not successful, the
City may need to shut down water service to City residents and municipal water
purchasers. If a water shutdown happens, the Health Department will issue a Boil Water
Order when the repair is complete. The City of Auburn anticipates the watermain repair
should be completed by 9:00 am on Thursday 9/2/10.

Water shutdown could affect all residents in the City of Auburn and those on public
water within the Town of Sennett (districts 1, 3, 5), Throop, Aurelius (districts 1 and 2),
Brutus, and Mentz.

Residents in the Montezuma Water District, Sennett Water Districts 2& 6, Brutus Water
District 3, the Springport Fleming Water District, Weedsport, and Port Byron will be
unaffected by the shutdown as they will be fed off of their water storage tanks. Each
water district storage tank capacity varies. Should storage tank use be exceeded,
residents would be advised.

The City of Auburn and the Cayuga County Health Department are recommending the
public prepare for this potential temporary water shutdown and boil water order by
having drinking water available to use. In addition, residents served by the water systems
affected are asked to conserve water beginning 11:00 pm on September 1, 2010 until the
repair is complete.

If a boil water order is issued by the Health Department, affected residents will be
advised to not drink the water for at least 2 days without boiling it first or use bottled
water certified for sale by New York State.
We are encouraging the public to watch the news media and the Cayuga County Health
Department website http://co.cayuga.ny.us/hhs/doh for updates on this situation.
