      Introduction

      No, other word stirs up the imagination more than Exorcism. Most likely conjuring up images of Linda Blair spewing pea soup, however there is a big difference between Hollywood's take on an exorcism and the ancient religious rite that is used to banish malevolent spirits.

      It's also vital to remember that the rite of exorcism is not a game or a form of idle entertainment it is a potent weapon used in ridding someone of spiritual forces that are causing havoc in their life. Using it for any other purpose will most likely only end badly.

      The point of an exorcism is banish and repel any malevolent forces that have taken residence either in a house, property, or in some cases even a person. These rituals are not for the faint of heart. Which is why there is only a select few in the Catholic Church which actually do it. The Catholic Church are not the only ones who can or do perform exorcisms they are just the oldest secular community which still practices it and has written the most about it.

      This book deals with the Catholic rite of exorcism taken from  the Exorcism of Pope Leo XIII. I have included the ritual as it is presented in most movies and other forms of media which seems to be an amalgamation of the ritual along with a group prayer beginning with or followed by a litany of the names of the Saints. Now I have left out the Latin translation not because I doubt it's effectiveness but in the hopes that many who seek to travel this path will find the English version more accessible.

      It is my hope that by presenting all the rituals that any person who is seeking to perform an exorcism will find themselves properly prepared for whatever they may face.

      The most important and obvious factor that is going to decide the effectiveness of whichever version of the Exorcism rite that you as an exorcist will decide to use is whether or not you have faith. Since, these are Christian rites therefore you should whole heartedly have faith and believe in God before you go out and try to rid someone of a Malevolent presence by calling upon him for help.

      This is usually why the rite of Exorcism is solely performed by member of the clergy. However, if you feel strongly that is something you are called to do and you truly have faith then by all means.

      What is a Malevolent Entity?

      When performing an exorcism you will be attempting to drive out a spiritual being usually a form of malevolent entity. This is a spirit entity that is causing harm to the person or their family. Commonly referred to by some as demons. The study of demons is known as demonology there are entire books devoted to it and since there is no way of knowing for sure what a malevolent entity actually is I won't go into detail in this book about the subversive spirits referred to as demons.
