50 years ago, Jurong was known simply as the Western region of mainland Singapore largely covered with farms, swamps and wasteland.

In the 1960s, it was challenging for Jurong to attract jobseekers and home dwellers as it had limited job opportunities and amenities.

Selected as Singapore's first industrial estate, the once underdeveloped land was upgraded with paved roads and streetlamps. The development of residential areas was also implemented to attract workers to settle in Jurong.

Attap houses were demolished to pave the way for the establishment of public housing. The extensive reconstructive plans led to the large-scale resettlement of residents. However, Jurong's populace gathered in strength to assist and speed up the construction process.

Affectionately nicknamed "No Man's Land", Jurong's infrastructure was intensively assembled to accommodate the district's growing population between 1972 and 1980. Schools, roads and bridges were constructed to improve the district's accessibility and availability of commodities for the residents.

Jurong faced infrastructure challenges entering the 21 st century. Having positioned itself as an industrial estate, Jurong captured the attention of Singaporeans from other parts of the country. The surge in demand for housing and general facilities led to the rolling out of blueprints for yet another major milestone

development.

Jurong is currently undergoing its next round of transfonnation. The construction of a new MRT station

at Beauty World, which is part of the DTL2 (Downtown Line 2), is currently underway and is scheduled for completion bY 2015.

All developments, including public transport facilities, will be inter. connected by an extensive network of elevated pedestrian walkways so people can walk comfortably in all weather.

Residents can also look forward to more amenities. greenery, publiC spaces and water-based recreation opportunities when the entire district goes through more development

within the next 10 to 15 years.

Jurong Group Representation Constituency (GRC) first came into existence during the 2001 General Election. The Jurong GRG consists of 5 dlvlsons: Bukit Batok, Bukit Batak East, Jurong Central, Taman Jurong and Yuhua. Each division is further divided into different zones or neighbourhoods where Residents' Committees (Res) or Neighbourhood Committees (Nes) are formed.

The Res and Nos have a common goal to build and strengthen community bonds among residents regardless of race or religion. The Committees also serve as a bridge for their residents and work closely with various agencies to improve the environment and safety of the Community.
