But this is the only one side of the
picture….!
Is it worth that much to have a
diamond?
What are Blood Diamonds?

• Illegally traded
diamonds which are
used to fund terrorist
and other illegal
activities including
drug smuggling,
money laundering,
and civil war.
Diamonds are considered Blood or
Conflict Diamonds when
• The diamonds are mined through forced
labor in areas under militia control.
• They have been stolen in transit and put to
illegal use.
• They could also have been seized by
attacking the operations of bona-fide
diamond mines.
UNO defines BLOOD DIAMOND as
“Diamonds that originate from areas
controlled by forces or factions opposed to
legitimate and internationally recognized
governments, and are used to fund military
action in opposition to those governments,
or in contravention of the decisions of the
Security Council.”
BACKGROUND TO BLOOD
DIAMONDS
• Blood diamonds are
mined in war zones,
primarily in Africa.
• Blood diamonds first
captured the world’s
attention during the brutal
conflict in Sierra Leone
during the late 90’s.
• It also includes places
like Angola, Liberia and
the Democratic Republic
of the Congo.
• Rebels group such as UNITA and RUF
took control of diamond mines and used
slave labor to dig and scavenge for
diamonds.
Eliminating Blood Diamonds:
THE KIMBERLEY PROCESS
• UN is trying to battle
Blood diamonds.
• Kimberley Process
certifies that a diamond is
conflict free.
• Thought the Kimberley
Process has in a long
way stanched Africa’s
bleeding, has not
completely eradicate
Blood diamonds.
Which in the end will have the
greatest value?
Which in the end we will care
the most ?
DEBEERS SLOGAN….?

slogan:
