EMF and MMF METHOD TO FIND THE REGULATION OF ALTERNATOR

Aim:- To find the %regulation of a given alternator by using EMF method.

Apparatus Required
Sl.No Apparatus Range Quantity
1 250 /1.5 A Rehostat 250 /1.5 3
2 Voltmeter 0- 600v 1
3 Ammeter 0-2A (DC) 1
4 Ammeter 0 – 10 A (AC) 1
5. Techometer Speed measurement 1

Procedure : -

To conduct the open circuit test:-

• Connections are made as shown in the circuit diagram.

• The 3 point starter is used to start the DC shunt motor.
• The field of the motor is adjusted from min position to obtain the rated speed of
the motor.
• Then the field of the alternator is adjusted in steps to obtain the rated voltage.
• At every adjustment the readings are noted in the table given below.
• Draw a graph between Vo(ph) Vs If to give the OC characteristics.

To conduct short circuit test:-

• Connections are made as shown in the circuit diagram and the secondaries of the
alternator is shorted as shown.
• The 3 point starter is used to start the DC shunt motor.
• The field of the motor is adjusted from min position to obtain the rated speed of
the motor.
• Then the field of the alternator is adjusted in steps to obtain the 125% of the rated
current (ISC).
• At every adjustment the readings are noted in the table given below.
• Draw a graph between ISC Vs If to give the SC characteristics.

Graph for EMF method:-

• Draw the OC Characteristics.

• Draw the SC characteristics.
• From the graph find the VOC for IF(SC) i.e E1(Ph).
• Calculations are made as per the formula given.

Graph for MMF method:-

• Draw the OC Characteristics.

• Draw the SC characteristics.
• Draw the Line OL to represent IF’, the rated generated voltage.
• From the VOC (max) find the IF (Use occ table last reading)
• From L mark two points c and d with values of IF(SC) from SC tabular column.
• With LC as radius draw a circle to join acd.
• Mark two points’ g and h at certain angle to define as lag and lead PF.
• At e, Pf = unity.
• Extend the line ‘g’ to meet occ curve to find the EO leading.
• Extend the line ‘h’to meet the occ to find the EO lagging.
