Rock the
River
Christian rock event aimed at ‘down
and out’ generation of youth
by Lorene Keitch
A
one-day festival organized by the Billy Gra-
ham Evangelical Association coming to Clo-
verdale next weekend is sure to attract large
numbers, say organizers of Rock the River.
This six-band concert is expected to draw thousands to
hear several high-profile Christian artists such as Skillet
and Starfield.
Dwayne Buhler, Rock the River communications vol-
unteer, says the event is geared mainly for a young adult
audience.
“We want to speak to those who are down and out,
to a generation of youth and give them reasons to live,”
Buhler explains.
In a society where youth often hear negative messages,
Rock the River is intended to bring a different kind of
message to today’s younger generation, he said.
The event is being put on in partnership with churches
across the Fraser Valley. The six bands will be the main
feature of the festival, but there will also be brief messages
from Franklin Graham, son of well-known TV evangelist
Billy Graham, interspersed throughout.
“For so many young people, their lives are upside down
and in a mess and they don’t even know why,” writes the
younger Graham in a press release. “That’s why I’m so
excited to have this opportunity to share the message of
God’s love with all these young people. It’s a chance to
change thousands of lives.”
While organizers are not sure exactly what kind of
turnout to expect, some of the individual bands have
been known to draw crowds of 3,000.
Rock the River is not a money-making venture at only
$10 per ticket, but Buhler says the intention, instead, is to
reach out to the community.
This year’s Rock the River tour includes stops in Clo-
verdale, Calgary and Edmonton. The tour dates follow
a first-year success for Rock the River last summer in
PHOTO
venues along the Mississippi River in the U.S.
For the local event, the Billy Graham Association
began by looking in Vancouver, but ran into “Olympics
fatigue” there when they proposed the idea to area pas-
tors, Buhler explains.
Looking further afield at outdoor venues, they came Skillet (above)
across Cloverdale’s Millennium Amphitheatre and knew and Starfield
