WiMAX - An Emerging

Wireless Communication
System
Internet today can be accessed by
three different ways

1. Broadband access
2. Wi-Fi access
3. Dial up access
Problem faced by these services:

Broadband – Its too much expensive

Wi-Fi – The hot spots are too small
Dialup – Telephone gets busy and the
B.W. is too low
WiMAX- WORLDWIDE
INTEROPERABILITY FOR
MICROWAVE ACCESS

Officially known as IEEE 802.16

It is MAN tech
CHARACTERISTICS OF WiMAX

Connectivity
Wireless alternative
High speed data transfer
Mobility
Nomadic connectivity
WiMAX provides two types of wireless
service:
IEEE 802.16 – 2004(IEEE 802.16d)
also known as fixed WiMAX or line of
sight service
IEEE 802.16 – 2005 (IEEE 802.16e)
also known as mobile WiMAX or non
line of sight service

WiMAX towers can be used to
connect several towns
WiMAX towers can connect with
other towers to extend its range.
Each WiMAX tower can connect with
Wi-Fi stations to provide service for
their hotspots.
ADVANTAGES
