Chapter 23

Of Singing of Psalms & etc.

1. We believe that singing the praises of God,

Acts 16:25 And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners
heard them.

Ephesians And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;

Ephesians Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making
5:19 melody in your heart to the Lord;
Ephesians Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord

Colossians Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing
3:16 one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your
hearts to the Lord.

is a holy ordinance of Christ, and not a part of natural religion, or a moral duty only;
but that it is brought under divine instutution, it being enjoined on the churches of
Christ to sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs; and that the whole church in their
public assemblies (as well as private Christians) ought to sing God's praises
according to the best light they have received.

Hebrews For both he that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of one: for which
2:11 cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren,
Hebrews Saying, I will declare thy name unto my brethren, in the midst of the church will I
2:12 sing praise unto thee.

James 5:13 Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms.
Moreover, it was practised in the great representative church by our Lord Jesus
Christ with His disciples,

Matthew 26:30 And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives.

after He had instituted and celebrated the sacred ordinance of His holy supper, as a
commemorative token of redeeming love.
