Cobs, Stalks and Wood Chips

Where are these biomass sources being used today? We’ll cover the economics of
these sources and what type of equipment is needed for harvesting, handling, and storage of
them. Finally, we’ll gaze into the crystal ball and discuss whether these sources are just a short-
term “fix” or part of the long-term biomass picture.
Miscanthus
Just what IS miscanthus? Can it be successfully grown in the Midwest? How does mis-
canthus get started and what, exactly, is involved in the planting process? Harvesting, han-
dling, and storage will also be addressed. We’ll also take a look at the bottom line: How does
miscanthus “pencil out” versus a traditional corn and soybean rotation?
Biomass and the Next Farm Bill
We’ll talk about what the future holds for biomass in the next Farm Bill and recap where
we stand today.
Potential Markets
A panel discussion will evaluate what is “in the works” today and at what locations.
They’ll address the farmer role in helping meet the goals of this new market and share the po-
tential of small scale markets that may be closer than you realize.
