Most contractors make a common error in selecting the
Switch Fuse Units (SFU) and HRC fuse links. Switchgears like SFUs should be selected according to the cable connected to feed the load. Switchgears are intended to protect the cable. By protecting the cable you protect the device from damage and save lives as well. For instance, if the total connected load for a Distribution Board (DB) is 12.5 kW, then the electrical load in Ampere is 20.75A. With an anticipated 25% increase in load, the electrical load will amount to 25.94A. So 4 core 10 sq mm AYFY cable with 32A current rating is suitable for feeding the load. Hence we would prefer to use 63A SFU with 32A HRC fuse link which is the most suitable SFU. Unfortunately, most electrical contractors use 63A SFU with 63A HRC fuse link which is actually intended to protect 3.5 core 35 sq mm AYFY cable. The disadvantage of using a higher HRC fuse link is that it will fail to protect the cable from the high fault currents during short circuits. Therefore it is extremely vital to design the switchgears with suitable current ratings.
