Information Explosion
By: Hazrat Maulana Ilyaas Patel Sahib
Never before has it been possible to access so
much of information with such ease. Daily, new
books grace the shelves of libraries and living rooms.
More magazines, periodicals and pamphlets are being
published than ever before. Furthermore, literally at
the press of a button, thousands of books on tafseer,
hadith, fiqh, Islamic history and almost every other
topic can be accessed. On-line courses and
innumerable websites, all in the name of Islam, are at
ones fingertips. Indeed there is a huge explosion of
information which is bombarding us from every
direction. The major challenge is how to handle this
information explosion?
The most critical issue in this regard is WHO is
giving out the information? This itself will also
determine another critical aspect: How authentic is the
information? Though we generally take these issues
very lightly, especially in this age of the information
explosion, yet it could very well be a matter of life and
death the death of ones Imaan. Hence Ibn-Sireen
(Rahmatullahi-Alaihi), who was among the greatest
Taabieen (companions of the Sahaaba Raziyallahu
Anhum), firmly stated: This knowledge is Deen.
Therefore, beware of who you take your Deen from?
(Shamaail-e-Tirmizi).

HEART ATTACK
The above statement has two fundamental
lessons. The first lesson is that one must have a
teacher who one learns Deen from. It is therefore
extremely tragic that, due to the advancement in
technology, many peoples teacher has become the
internet or computer programs. Imagine a person with
a severe heart condition referring to the internet for
treatment. He stumbles upon an advert marketing a
product which promises a miraculous cure for his
ailment. If the ailing person decides to take this
unknown product from an unknown person for his
heart condition, what will any sane person think of
him? More crucial than treating the physical heart is
the health of the spiritual heart. Therefore, can just
any website, online course, blog, or just any book or
person be OK to learn Deen from??? Is the fancy label
in the form of catchy slogans, glossy titles and a
captivating style of writing a good enough basis to rely
on the product? Such a careless attitude carries an
extremely severe risk of a spiritual heart attack!!!
Furthermore, nobodys knowledge is reliable in
any field if it is not acquired from an expert teacher in
that field. Any person who claims to be a doctor,
lawyer or engineer due to having studied all the
material on the subject from books and on the internet,
will surely be shunned by every intelligent person. He
will also be legally prevented from practicing in that
field. This is simply due to him not having learnt his
field from a recognised teacher, who himself learnt

ORATORY
The second lesson in the statement of IbnSireen (Rahmatullahi-Alaihi) was to choose a teacher
carefully, ensuring that he is reliable in Deen. Taking
just anyone as a teacher is very dangerous. Often the
basis for taking Deen from someone is merely the
persons oratory skills, or his apparent expertise in
Islamic sciences or his proficiency in the Arabic
language. This alone is not sufficient, especially when
Hazrat Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) has warned
of such scholars who will have knowledgeable
tongues but hearts of wolves.

DISCERN
Thus it has always been fundamentally
important to first check WHO or WHERE one learns
Deen from. The information explosion has increased
this importance by a million times. If one listens to or
reads just anything and everything without having
thorough knowledge of the Holy Quraan and Sunnah,
one will not be able to discern what is correct or what

GUIDELINES
This begs the crucial question: How does one
determine WHO is reliable? A few guidelines gleaned
from the Holy Quraan and Sunnah are:

COMMON SENSE
A common sense approach is to determine
what the learned and pious think of the person. This
will be a good indication of whether one is making a
sound choice. The situation is similar to that of a
person seeking a good doctor to treat a complicated
illness. He will generally check two things: What is
the success rate of that doctor and what do other
doctors have to say about him. The same approach
must be adopted to a much greater extent to find the
right guide in Deen. With each passing day, more
and more information will continue to explode from
every source and media. Let us firmly stick to
someone WHO is reliable so that the wrong

TAFSEER
(Commentary of the Holy Quran)
By: Hazrat Maulana Mufti Muhammad Shafi Sahib (Rahmatullahi Alaihi)
SURAH AL-BAQARAH
Note: This part of Tafseer is the remaining portion of
Surah Al-Baqarah Tafseer and hence connected with
the previous chapter of Surah Al-Baqarah Tafseer.
On the other hand, miracles happen directly
under divine command without the intervention of
physical causes. For example, the Holy Quran tells
us how the tyrant Namrud (Nimrod) threw Sayyidina
Hazrat Ibraheem Alaihis Salaam into a blazing fire, and
how Allah Taala commanded the fire to grow cold
for him, but not so cold as to do him harm and the
fire obeyed the command, and, instead of scorching
him, provided a place of safety. This was a direct
divine act, and hence a miracle. Now, we sometimes
hear of men who, having applied certain chemicals

Tas-heelul Ahadeeth
Translation:
Sayyidna Abu Umamah Bahili Raziyallahu Anhu
relates that Sayyidina Hazrat Rasulullah (Sallallahu
Alaihi Wasallam) said: I stand surety for a home on
the side of a paradise for one who will give up
quarreling although he may be in the right; and a
home in the center of paradise for one who will
give up lying even in joke; and a home in the
highest paradise for one whose behavior is
excellent. Abu Dawood

he may be correct.
A person who never lies not even in joke.
A person who has good character / behavior.
Just as this Hadith shows us the intense
dislike of quarreling and lying and the virtue of
good character, it also teaches us that we should
not even lie when making jokes.
Lessons:
1. To abstain from quarreling and speaking lies.
2. To adopt good character.

Commentary:
The birds are very feeble creation of Allah
Taala, yet they never die of starvation. The
question is: Who sustain them? From where do
they get their food? And the answer is most
definitely Allah Taala.
We learn from this Hadith that if man relies on
Allah Taala, Allah Taala will sustain hi m jus t as he
sustains the birds. When man places full reliance on
Allah Taala, he will never fear a shortage in his
sustenance just as the birds never fear any shortage
or lack of sustenance.
However, this does not negate the importance
of adopting the worldly means (e.g. a burglar al arm
for security, a business or employment for earni ng
or living etc.) in fact, the Quran and Sunnah
commands us to adopt the worldly means. The
meaning of reliance on Allah Taala (tawakkul) is
that after adopting the worldly means one relies
only on Allah Taala and not the worldly means.
Lessons:
1. Place your trust on Allah Taala as He is the
provider of all ones deeds.

Haashim:
Haashim was the first to initiate the custom of
sending off two trade caravan a year; a caravan t o
Syria in summer and a caravan to Yemen in wi nt er.
According to this unvarying custom, a caravan
would set out in every season of the year. Over
desolate swathes of land, through scorching deserts
and dangerous journeys by land and sea, these
caravans would travel in winter towards Yemen and
beyond going right up to as for as Ethi opia. Negus ,
the emperor of Ethiopia was exceedingly hos pitable
towards Haashim and would present a number of
gifts to him. In summer, the caravan would travel to
Syria (including Jordan and Lebanon), Gaza and
Ankara (which was then the capital of Rome).

Respect for Asaatizah (Teachers)
The student should not decide for himself
which kitaabs should be studied. In former times,
the students would leave all matters pertai ni ng t o
their studies for their ustaadhs to decide, resulting
in them being successful in their endeavours . But ,
when students started deciding for themselves
which courses and kitaabs to study, they were
deprived of knowledge.
Hazrat Imam Bukhari Rahmatullahi Alaihi had
started learning kitaabus Salaah under Hazrat
Muhammad bin Hasan Rahmatullahi Alaihi. Hazrat
Muhammad bin Hasan Rahmatullahi Alaihi suggested
to him, It is more appropriate for you to study
hadeeth because I find that you have an affinity
