Information Explosion
By: Hazrat Maulana Ilyaas Patel Sahib
Never before has it been possible to access so
much of information with such ease. Daily, new
books grace the shelves of libraries and living rooms.
More magazines, periodicals and pamphlets are being
published than ever before. Furthermore, literally at
the press of a button, thousands of books on tafseer,
hadith, fiqh, Islamic history and almost every other
topic can be accessed. On-line courses and
innumerable websites, all in the name of Islam, are at
ones fingertips. Indeed there is a huge explosion of
information which is bombarding us from every
direction. The major challenge is how to handle this
information explosion?
The most critical issue in this regard is WHO is
giving out the information? This itself will also
determine another critical aspect: How authentic is the
information? Though we generally take these issues
very lightly, especially in this age of the information
explosion, yet it could very well be a matter of life and
death the death of ones Imaan. Hence Ibn-Sireen
(Rahmatullahi-Alaihi), who was among the greatest
Taabieen (companions of the Sahaaba Raziyallahu
Anhum), firmly stated: This knowledge is Deen.
Therefore, beware of who you take your Deen from?
(Shamaail-e-Tirmizi).

HEART ATTACK
The above statement has two fundamental
lessons. The first lesson is that one must have a
teacher who one learns Deen from. It is therefore
extremely tragic that, due to the advancement in
technology, many peoples teacher has become the
internet or computer programs. Imagine a person with
a severe heart condition referring to the internet for
treatment. He stumbles upon an advert marketing a
product which promises a miraculous cure for his
ailment. If the ailing person decides to take this
unknown product from an unknown person for his
heart condition, what will any sane person think of
him? More crucial than treating the physical heart is
the health of the spiritual heart. Therefore, can just
any website, online course, blog, or just any book or
person be OK to learn Deen from??? Is the fancy label
in the form of catchy slogans, glossy titles and a
captivating style of writing a good enough basis to rely
on the product? Such a careless attitude carries an
extremely severe risk of a spiritual heart attack!!!
Furthermore, nobodys knowledge is reliable in
any field if it is not acquired from an expert teacher in
that field. Any person who claims to be a doctor,
lawyer or engineer due to having studied all the
material on the subject from books and on the internet,
will surely be shunned by every intelligent person. He
will also be legally prevented from practicing in that
field. This is simply due to him not having learnt his
field from a recognised teacher, who himself learnt

July 2016

S hawwaal 1437

similarly from an expert, all the way to the top. Having

a teacher is therefore essential.

ORATORY
The second lesson in the statement of IbnSireen (Rahmatullahi-Alaihi) was to choose a teacher
carefully, ensuring that he is reliable in Deen. Taking
just anyone as a teacher is very dangerous. Often the
basis for taking Deen from someone is merely the
persons oratory skills, or his apparent expertise in
Islamic sciences or his proficiency in the Arabic
language. This alone is not sufficient, especially when
Hazrat Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) has warned
of such scholars who will have knowledgeable
tongues but hearts of wolves.

In another narration he cautioned against

scholars who are people with tongues sweeter than
honey but hearts more bitter than aloe (which is very
bitter).

Oratory skills alone are, therefore, no basis for

such a critical choice. History bears testimony that over
the centuries many scholars with completely corrupt
beliefs have swayed thousands of people with their
oratory or flowery writings and their apparent expertise
in Islamic sciences. While many simple people followed
such deviated scholars and organisations, a great
number of those who were carried away by the
outward sophistication of an organisation or the
apparent intellect of a so-called scholar were the

July 2016

S hawwaal 1437

wealthy and educated class. Consider one example.

The deviation and corruption in the beliefs of the false
prophet and the founder of the Qaadiaani movement,
Ghulam Ahmed Qaadiaani, are easily understood by
even ordinary laymen when it is explained to them in
the light of the Holy Quraan and Sunnah. Yet, many of
his followers up to this day are highly educated. They
were caught up by what appeared to be excellent
scholarship but in reality they were entrapped into
rejecting some of the most fundamental beliefs of a
Muslim. Yet others fell into complete confusion after
being misled into believing that if one follows one of
the four Imaams of fiqh (Imaam Abu Hanifah, Imaam
Shaafiee, etc.) one will be following something other
than the true Deen. Hence they abandoned following
the true Imaams and Mujtahids (jurists) who were
masters and experts in the knowledge of the Holy
Quran and Sunnah. In place of the Imaams of fiqh,
they then began following the interpretations of
modern day scholars whose knowledge of Deen is but
a mere fraction of the knowledge of the great Imaams.

DISCERN
Thus it has always been fundamentally
important to first check WHO or WHERE one learns
Deen from. The information explosion has increased
this importance by a million times. If one listens to or
reads just anything and everything without having
thorough knowledge of the Holy Quraan and Sunnah,
one will not be able to discern what is correct or what

July 2016

S hawwaal 1437

is not. Therefore, the best route is to refrain from

referring to any unknown sources. Once Sayyidina
Umar Faarooq (Raziyallahu-Anhu ) requested permission
from Hazrat Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) to read
the Torah and benefit from its wisdoms. Hazrat
Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) strongly forbade him
from doing so, despite the fact that the Holy Quraan
has itself declared the Torah as guidance. The reason
for the prohibition was that the Torah was greatly
interpolated and distorted by the Jews. Furthermore,
the Holy Quraan was still not entirely revealed and
Deen was not yet completed. Hence due to this
situation even somebody of the calibre of Sayyiduna
Umar Faarooq (Raziyallahu-Anhu) may not have been able
to immediately discern what was authentic and
unchanged and what was the distortion of the Jews.
This incident clearly highlights the key aspect which is
the ability to DISCERN what conforms to the word and
spirit of Deen and what does not. This is not possible
without thorough knowledge. Therefore, the only resort
is to turn to someone WHO is reliable.

GUIDELINES
This begs the crucial question: How does one
determine WHO is reliable? A few guidelines gleaned
from the Holy Quraan and Sunnah are:

The person must be knowledgeable.

He must be a pious person. This refers to one
who fulfils all the obligations of Deen, adheres to

July 2016

S hawwaal 1437

the Sunnah and who is not a flagrant sinner.

The people who associate with him generally
progress in Deen and become more conscious o f
adopting the Sunnah in their lives.
He should be a person who is blessed with
Sharhus-Sadr (an enlightened heart). The signs
of Sharhus-Sadr that have been explained in the
Hadith are: He is disinclined from the world, his
heart is focussed towards the Hereafter and he
prepares for death.
The great Muhaddith Ibraahim Nakhaee states:
When people would come to learn Deen from
someone, they would look at his character, his
salaah and his general condition.

COMMON SENSE
A common sense approach is to determine
what the learned and pious think of the person. This
will be a good indication of whether one is making a
sound choice. The situation is similar to that of a
person seeking a good doctor to treat a complicated
illness. He will generally check two things: What is
the success rate of that doctor and what do other
doctors have to say about him. The same approach
must be adopted to a much greater extent to find the
right guide in Deen. With each passing day, more
and more information will continue to explode from
every source and media. Let us firmly stick to
someone WHO is reliable so that the wrong

S hawwaal 1437

July 2016

information does not explode our Deen!

TAFSEER
(Commentary of the Holy Quran)
By: Hazrat Maulana Mufti Muhammad Shafi Sahib (Rahmatullahi Alaihi)

SURAH AL-BAQARAH
Note: This part of Tafseer is the remaining portion of
Surah Al-Baqarah Tafseer and hence connected with
the previous chapter of Surah Al-Baqarah Tafseer.
On the other hand, miracles happen directly
under divine command without the intervention of
physical causes. For example, the Holy Quran tells
us how the tyrant Namrud (Nimrod) threw Sayyidina
Hazrat Ibraheem Alaihis Salaam into a blazing fire, and
how Allah Taala commanded the fire to grow cold
for him, but not so cold as to do him harm and the
fire obeyed the command, and, instead of scorching
him, provided a place of safety. This was a direct
divine act, and hence a miracle. Now, we sometimes
hear of men who, having applied certain chemicals
to

their

body,

can

enter

fire

without

being

scorched. This is not a miracle, for the operative

cause is of a physical nature that is, the chemicals.
These chemicals are not known to people in general,
and

they

are

deluded

into

believing

such

10

S hawwaal 1437

July 2016

performance

to

be

a supernatural event going

beyond the realm of the habitual. The Holy Quran

itself leaves no doubt as to a miracle being directly
an act of Allah Taala Himself. In the battle of Badr,
the Holy Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam took up a
handful of pebbles, and threw them at the army of
the infidels, which blinded their eyes. Referring to
this miracle, the Holy Quran says:

When you threw (the pebbles), it is not you who threw, but
Allah who threw (them) (8:17).

The statement is explicit enough, and means

that the miraculous result produced by a handful of
pebbles was not the work of the Holy Prophet
Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam, but the act of Allah Taala

Himself.
Miracle & Magic: How to distinguish between
them?
Having explained the difference between the
nature of a miracle and that of magic, we must turn
to

another

important

question

---

the

results

produced by each of them being in appearance the

same, how

is

the

common man to

know the

difference between the two? In fact, Allah Taala has

given to each certain characteristic features which
can help the common man to distinguish miracles

11

S hawwaal 1437

July 2016

from magic. Firstly, miracles are manifested through

those whom everyone knows to be clean in body,
pure in deeds and God-fearing. On the contrary,
magic shows its effectiveness through those who are
unclean

in

body,

dirty

in

deeds,

shunning

the

worship of Allah and His remembrance. This is a

distinction which everyone can observe with his own
eyes. Secondly, Allah Taala has so ordained things
that if a man pretends to be a Prophet and claims to
perform miracles, and yet tries to perform magic, his
magic is never effective, but he can be effective in
magic so long as he does not lay a claim to prophet
hood.
Magic & Prophets:
As to the question whether magic can have an
effect on Prophets, we shall say that it can. As we
have

explained

above,

magic

operates

through

physical causes and Prophets are not immune to the

influence of physical causes. Just as they feel the
effects of hunger and thirst, fall ill and get healed
through the operation of apparent physical causes,
in the same way they can be affected by the hidden
operations of magic, which are no less physical. Let
us add that being affected by magic does in no way
goes against the dignity of the station of prophet
hood --- no more than would thirst or hunger.

Tas-heelul Ahadeeth

Translation:
Sayyidna Abu Umamah Bahili Raziyallahu Anhu
relates that Sayyidina Hazrat Rasulullah (Sallallahu
Alaihi Wasallam) said: I stand surety for a home on
the side of a paradise for one who will give up
quarreling although he may be in the right; and a
home in the center of paradise for one who will
give up lying even in joke; and a home in the
highest paradise for one whose behavior is
excellent. Abu Dawood

Commentary:
Hazrat Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam)
guarantees Jannah for each of the following:
A person who avoids quarreling even though

13

S hawwaal 1437

July 2016

he may be correct.
A person who never lies not even in joke.
A person who has good character / behavior.
Just as this Hadith shows us the intense
dislike of quarreling and lying and the virtue of
good character, it also teaches us that we should
not even lie when making jokes.

Lessons:
1. To abstain from quarreling and speaking lies.
2. To adopt good character.

Translation:
Sayyidna Umar bin Khattab Raziyallahu Anhu
relates that he heard Sayyidina Hazrat Rasulullah
(Sallallahu

Alaihi

Wasallam)

say:

If

you

rely

completely on Allah Taala, He will sustain you in

the same way as He provides for the birds. They
go out in the morning with their stomachs empty
and return filled in the evening.

14

July 2016

S hawwaal 1437

Commentary:
The birds are very feeble creation of Allah
Taala, yet they never die of starvation. The
question is: Who sustain them? From where do
they get their food? And the answer is most
definitely Allah Taala.
We learn from this Hadith that if man relies on
Allah Taala, Allah Taala will sustain hi m jus t as he
sustains the birds. When man places full reliance on
Allah Taala, he will never fear a shortage in his
sustenance just as the birds never fear any shortage
or lack of sustenance.
However, this does not negate the importance
of adopting the worldly means (e.g. a burglar al arm
for security, a business or employment for earni ng
or living etc.) in fact, the Quran and Sunnah
commands us to adopt the worldly means. The
meaning of reliance on Allah Taala (tawakkul) is
that after adopting the worldly means one relies
only on Allah Taala and not the worldly means.

Lessons:
1. Place your trust on Allah Taala as He is the
provider of all ones deeds.

15

S hawwaal 1437

July 2016

2. Do not rely only on worldly means.

Maternal lineage
Haashim:
Haashim was the first to initiate the custom of
sending off two trade caravan a year; a caravan t o
Syria in summer and a caravan to Yemen in wi nt er.
According to this unvarying custom, a caravan
would set out in every season of the year. Over
desolate swathes of land, through scorching deserts
and dangerous journeys by land and sea, these
caravans would travel in winter towards Yemen and
beyond going right up to as for as Ethi opia. Negus ,
the emperor of Ethiopia was exceedingly hos pitable
towards Haashim and would present a number of
gifts to him. In summer, the caravan would travel to
Syria (including Jordan and Lebanon), Gaza and
Ankara (which was then the capital of Rome).
Heraclius,

the Byzantine emperor would also

16

July 2016

S hawwaal 1437

approach Haashim with utmost respect and would

often present gifts to him.

Haashim initiated two journeys for himself and for his people,
A journey in winter whilst another journey in summer.

Haashim secured assurances of extensive

protection from the Yemeni as well as the Roman
governments for his trade caravans. Since the trade
routes of Arabia were not really safe from robbers .
Haashim put in place a pact with all various tribes of
the peninsula assuring them that we (Makkans)
would freely transport your basic necessiti es t o you
whilst you in turn should pledge a s afe passage t o
all our caravans passing through your t ri bal l ands.
As a result of Haashims brilliant strategy, all the
trade routes leading to and from Makkah were
rendered safe.
Allah Taala also draws the attention of the
Quraysh to his bounty in the following words:

(With the grace of Allah) Due to the habituated custom of the

Quraysh, their habitual custom of setting forth in winter and
summer, (as a form of gratitude), they should worship Allah,

17

July 2016

S hawwaal 1437

the Lord of this house, He Who has fed them against hunger
and shielded them from fear. (Al_Quraysh verses 1-4).

During the days of Hajj, Haashim woul d feed

all the pilgrims with meat, roti, s aweeq and dat es.
He would also provide Zam Zam water to t hem. He
would make similar provisions for them at Mina,
Muzdalifa and Arafaat.
Umayyah bin Abdu Shams was incredibly
perturbed by Haashims generosity and he became
upset over Haashims influence over the Arabs.
Umayyah also attempted to feed the pilgrims just as
Haashim was feeding them. However, in spite of hi s
privileged affluence, he was unable to compete wi t h
Haashim.
This is the catalyst that sparked off a
succession of the relentless hostilities bet ween t he
banu Haashim and the banu Umayyah clans.
On one occasion, Haashim accompanied a
trade caravan that halted at Madi nah (probably en
route to Syria). His gaze fell on a woman in the
market place of Madinah. Apart from her exceptional
beauty, her exquisite facial features portrayed a
woman of noble reputation and keen intelligence.
Haashim made some enquiries to establish whet her
she was married or single. He learnt that she was
married to Asihah bin Jallah from whom she
mothered two sons; Amt and Mabad. As ihah l ater

Fear of Allah TaaAla

Hazrat Umar Raziyallahu Anhu and the fear

of Allah Taala:
Hazrat Umar Raziyallahu Anhu asked: Why are
these children crying?
The woman replied: because they are
hungry.
Hazrat Umar Raziyallahu Anhu asked: What is in
the pan?
The woman replied: Only water, to soothe
the children, so that they may go to sleep in the
belief that food is being prepared for them. Ah! On
the Day of Qiyaamah, Allah Taala will judge
between (Hazrat) Umar (Raziyallahu Anhu) and me,
for neglecting me in my distress.
(Hazrat) Umar (Raziyallahu Anhu) (weeping) said:
May Allah Taala have mercy on you! How can
(Hazrat) Umar (Raziyallahu Anhu) know of your distress?
The woman replied: When he is our Ameer,
he must keep himself informed about us.

S hawwaal 1437

Hazrat Umar Raziyallahu Anhu returned to the

town and immediately went to Baitul-Maal t o fi l l a
sack with floor, dates, fat and clothes, and also
drew some money. When the sack was ready, he
said to Aslam: Now put this sack on my back,
Aslam.
Aslam protested: No please, AmirulMomineen! I shall carry this sack.
Hazrat Umar Raziyallahu Anhu refused to listen
to Aslam, even on his persistent requests to al l ow
him to carry the sack, and remarked: What! Will
you carry my load on the Day of Qiyaamah? I
must carry this bag, for it is I who would be
questioned (in the Hereafter) about this woman.
Aslam most reluctantly placed a bag on
Hazrat Umars Raziyallahu Anhu back and he carried
it with a swift pace right to the womans tent.
Aslam followed at his heels. He put a little flour
and some dates and fat in the pan and began to
stir. He blew (with his mouth) into the fire to
kindle it.
Aslam says: I saw the smoke passing
through his thick beard.
After some time, the food was ready. He
himself served it to the family. After they had
eaten to their fill, he made over to them t he l i t t l e
that was left for their next meal. The children were
very happy after their meal and began to play
about merrily. The woman felt very grateful and
remarked: May Allah Taala reward you for your
kindness! In fact you deserve to take the place of
Khalifah instead of (Hazrat) Umar (Raziyallahu

20

S hawwaal 1437

Anhu).

Hazrat Umar Raziyallahu Anhu consoled her

and said: When you come to see Khalifah, you
will find me there.
He sat for a while at a place close by and
kept on watching the children. He then returned to
Madinah. On his way back, he said to Aslam: Do
you know why I sat there, Aslam? I had seen
them weeping in distress; I liked to see them
laughing and happy for some time.
It is said that Hazrat Umar Raziyallahu Anhu
used to recite Surah Kahf, Surah Taha and other
such Surahs when leading Fajr Salah and would
weep so much, that his crying could be heard way
back to several rows. Once he was reciting Surah
Yousufin Fajr , when he came to the verse:

I only complain of my distress and anguish unto Allah,

(S12:V86)

He wept so much, that he could not recite

any further. In Tahajjud Salah, he would
sometimes fall to the ground and would get
indisposed with excessive weeping.
Such was the fear of Allah Taala in Hazrat
Umar Raziyallahu Anhu, whose name struck terror in
the hearts of the mightiest kings of his time. Even
today, the people are filled with awe when they
read about him. Is there any person in power

Hazrat Hawwa Alaihas Salaam was created from

Is it established from any authentic hadeet h
that Hazrat Hawwa Alaihas Salaam was created from

In an authentic hadeeth it is mentioned:

(Women are created from a rib)

Under the commentary of this Hadeeth,

Mulla Ali Qari writes:

(Women refers to the origin of women or the entire species

of women or the mother of all women, and rib refers to the

The entire Hadeeth is as follows:

Women have been created from the rib which
can never be straightened. Benefit can only be
derived by keeping the crookedness. If you try to
straighten it, it will break and breaking it is
divorcing her. (Mishkaat, Vol 2, Pg 280 with

His wife comforted him and said, Do not

she poured vinegar and gave it to Shah Abdul

Shah Abdul Azeez drank all the vinegar

Critically examine society

The social point of view must be considered too
when rearing a child and building character. The child
must be trained to observe society carefully and,
whenever the

need arises, to

offer constructive

criticism and suggestions. One will learn to contribute

ones share too in the building up society. One must
speak the truth and be courageous and bold.

The principles and steps that hel p develop a

childs powers of observance, criticism and guidance
of public opinion are discussed here.
Moulding public opinion
Islam requires the guiding of public opinion
along correct lines, to command whatever is
virtuous and to forbid that which is disapproved of.
It is a duty placed on the entire Ummah. This

obligation is placed on every Muslim, be he a rul er,

aalim or a non-aalim, man, woman, young, old,
employer or employee. Np-one is exempted from
this responsibility. It is for this reason that Mus lims
are known as the best Ummah1. This facet has been
made incumbent on all Muslims.2 When the Noble
Rasuul Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam took his followers
allegiance, he also placed on them the duty of
guiding.3 Society must keep an eye on the individual
and the individual on society. The Noble Rasuul
Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam gave an example of people i n
a boat who drew lots. Some acquired a place on t he
top deck and some on the lower deck. When the
ones on the lower deck wanted water, t hey had t o
go past the ones on the upper deck. The ones on
the lower deck said, If we made a hole in our part ,
we would not trouble the ones above us. Yet i f t he
ones on the top deck left them (to do as they
pleased), all would perish. If they restrained the
lower deck people all would be saved.4
The Israelites invited the wrath of Allah Taala,
the Most High, on themselves when they gave up
their duty of commanding others to do good and
forsake evil.5 In spite of their sinful life and the
excesses committed by them , their scholars ate

said:
Overcome by fear of Allah Taala, Hazrat
Imam Abu Hanifahs Rahmatullahi Alaihi weeping
could be heard right outside. On hearing his
excessive weeping, even his neighbours were
overwhelmed with pity for him.

Waki Ibn Jarrah narrates:

By Allah! Hazrat Imam Abu Hanifah Sahib Rahmatul lah i
Alaihi was a man of great trust. His heart was b r im min g
with the sublimity and grandeur of Allah Taala. He u sed
to give preference to the satisfaction of Allah Taala
above all else. If a sword had to be run over his neck f o r
the pleasure of Allah Taala, he wo u l d h ave en du red i t

Yahya Ibn Main says that he heard Yahya Ibn Said Qattan saying:
By Allah! We sat in the company o f Haz rat Im am A b u
Hanifah Rahmatullahi Alaihi and we heard many religious
issues from him. I swear by Allah! When I u s ed to l oo k
towards his face, I used to be overcome with firm
conviction that this man is very fearful of Allah Taala.
Qasim Ibn Man narrates:
Hazrat Imam Abu Hanifah Rahmatullahi Alaihi once spent
the entire night weeping and re peatedly reciting the
following verse in Salah:

Nay, the hour (of judgment) is the time promised to

them and the hour will be most grievous and most
bitter. (Surah Qamr Verse 46).
Yazid Ibn Kumait, a pious saint, narrates:
Hazrat Imam Abu Hanifah Rahmatullahi Alaihi wa s very

When the people departed after Salah, I saw Hazrat

The worship of Itikaaf-1437 AH

Every year, in the blessed month of Ramazaan, the number
of such Muslim men who throng the campus of DarulUloom Raheemiyyah Bandipora Kashmir for performing the

worship of Itikaaf in its spacious Masjid-Shareef in the

company of the Honourable Chancellor-cum-Spiritual
Master, Hazrat Maulana Mufti Muhammad Rahmatullah
Sahib Qasmi Daamat-Barakatuhum is increasing, Alhamdu-Lillah.
In the current year, a large gathering performed the worship
of Itikaaf in the last ten days of Ramazanul-Mubarak here.
The reason is that the Itikaaf performed here yields much
benefits than the Itikaaf being performed at other places of
the state. And after performing the worship of Itikaaf here,
the majority of such Muslim men show a discernible
improvement in their character, behavior, duty in office and
in business transactions in the market.
The Spiritual Master, Hazrat Maulana Mufti Muhammad
Rahmatullah Sahib Qasmi Daamat-Barakatuhum, teaches
guiding principles for achieving Tazkiyah (purifying the
inner-soul) to the people who perform the worship of Itikaaf
here and persuades them to shun sins, bad habits and
detestable traits by delivering soothing speeches during the
days of Itikaaf in the Masjid-Shareef of Raheemiyyah
varsity regularly. Their soft and spiritual lessons on ethics
and morals make the attendees of Itikaaf able to devote
themselves fully to Zikrullaah: the remembrance of Allah
Taala every time. And spending the minutes and the hours
of ones life under the limits of Islamic Shariah is very
similar to remembering Allah Taala every time.
