Brief Description of Students in My Classroom

This classroom management plan is being developed for a fourth grade class at
Guild Elementary. Guild has approximately 63% of the student population is on free
and reduced lunch. I have about twenty, diverse students in my classroom.

School Wide House System (from Ron Clark Academy)

Our school adopted the house system from Ron Clark Academy. Our entire
student/teacher population is divided into one of these five houses. Our houses can
be seen in the pictures below. The students are very excited about this program!
How it works:
1. Each Student/Teacher is placed into one of these houses
2. Students earn points for their house by doing something good (walking down
the hallway quietly, doing something kind for a friend, etc.) For the students
in my room, I will be giving out points when students do things that that are
exceptional. For example, when a student helps another student when it is
not expected of them.
3. Teachers give out the points
4. Each classroom keeps up with each houses points within their classrooms
5. Teachers turn in the total points for each house each week
6. Awards: A house winner is chosen each nine weeks. Each semester a house
winner is chosen. The winning house of each semester gets to have a Fun in
the Sun day toward the end of the year.

Class Dojo
This year I will be implementing Class Dojo in our classroom. Class Dojo is an app
where students can receive points or have points taken away. However, Class
Dojo is so much more than points. Students and parents can be added to the list.
Parents can see how their students did on any particular day. It allows me to
share things that we are doing in our classrooms (assignments, pictures, video of
experiments, etc.). It also allows me to keep attendance and view reports of
student behavior (either by whole class or by an individual student). On the first
day of school, we will determine different things that students should receive

Sarah Spillers
points for. This will be a joint discussion/agreement between the teacher and the
students.
**The following is subject to change after we have a class meeting regarding
what points should be given for. I do hope the following make it on the list!
Students will be rewarded Dojo points for the following:
Class Participation
Hitting a Goal that had previously been set (by the teacher and the student)
Going out of their way to assist someone (peer tutoring, assisting another
teacher)

Rules and Values of Our Classroom

Rules will be determined through a discussion with the teacher and the students.
They will determine the five most important class rules that will keep everyone
safe and on task. All rules must be agreed upon by the teacher and a majority of
the students.
*I hope to see these two rules on the students list. After the discussion, the
teacher will ensure that the rules are written effectively. The teacher will then
present the final list to the whole class so that everyone can agree on the final
product.
1. Always try
2.
3. Keep your hands and feet to yourself
4.

Consequences for Our Classroom

Consequences in our classroom will also be a teacher/student agreement. We
will make a list of consequences that we feel are appropriate for common
classroom misbehaviors. Students will be made aware that the teacher and the
student receiving the consequence will have the final say in what their
consequence will be. *Each individual and incident is different and will be
handled accordingly.
**The following are subject to change after teacher/student discussion.
Consequences will be (non-sequential), but are not limited to:
A-Writing an apology note
B-Writing what they will do differently next time
CD- Principals office (Mandatory if students get physical with each other)

O-Other (Teachers discretion)

Weekly Student Goal Sheet

Students will complete a weekly goal sheet for their behavior and academic
performance. Students will have a partner that helps them keep their goals in mind
throughout the week. They can also offer words of encouragement to their partner
throughout the week. The students will share at least one of their behavior goals
with their partner during our Monday morning meeting. After each the students
discuss, the class will offer their support with positive statements.
This will help the students keep their goal in mind because it is somewhat public,
but not so public that all eyes are on them. Only their partner and the teacher will
know their goals. This will help hold them accountable in a positive manner.

Social Contract
After the rules, values, and consequences have been determined and agreed upon,
the teacher and students will complete a social contract with each other. This will
assist is holding everyone accountable to the rules, values, and consequences that
have been predetermined.

Strategy for Dealing with Conflict- STAR

S-Stop, T-Think, A-Act, R-Review

Seating Arrangement
Students will sit individually at the start of the year. After a couple of weeks, a new
seating arrangement will be implemented. Once students are placed into groups,
students will be expected to:
1. Treat each group member with respect
2. Be attentive when the teacher is talking
3. Work effectively on individual and group work
*Seating arrangement is subject to change throughout the year.

Morning Meetings
Morning meetings will be a place where we can gather before our day starts and
build the community in our classroom. This will be where students can share various
things about themselves that they would like to share. There will be a question of
the day that students will complete and be ready to share (if they would like) as
soon as they get their things put away.

Sarah Spillers
Example: Magnificent Monday-What will you do to make this year
magnificent?
At the end of every week, students will write their goals for the next week. On
Mondays, students will get with their partner and share their goal(s). The partners
will provide positive accountability and support to each other throughout the week.

iPad Apps in Our Classroom

This is the current list of iPad apps that will be integrated into our classroom. This
will be an evolving list as our classroom needs change.
1. Student Callout App- The purpose of this app is to call on students
randomly. This ensures that all students are called on. This also eliminates
gender bias. This will guarantee that everyone has an opportunity to
participate.
2. Too Noisy App- The purpose of this app is to keep the volume at a
minimum. There is a noise odometer that moves side to side depending on
the volume level. There is a smiley face that changes based on the students
noise level. This app helps students see how loud they are and it puts the
responsibility on them.
3. Class Dojo- Described in detail on page 1.

LeMov Techniques
1. SLANT-

S- Sit up
L- Listen
A- Ask and Answer questions
N- Nod Your Head
T- Track the Speaker
Description: This is an acronym used to get students
attention. When a teacher says slant, the students know that
they need to sit up, listen, ask and answer questions, nod your
head, and track the speaker. The purpose is to have attentive
students that participate in the lesson that is being taught. When
students are attentive, they are more likely to retain information.
Expected Results: Attentive students
High class participation
With attentive students and higher class
participation, student grades should improve and
their knowledge should increase

Sarah Spillers

Less behavior problems

When it Might be used: During a lesson
When a guest speaker is in your classroom
When students are doing peer teaching
2. What To DoDescription: This technique focuses on telling students exactly
what you want them to do. It says to take certain phrases and
change them to make them more specific so that students know
exactly what to do. For example, telling a student to pay
attention is not very specific and it is not observable. Instead,
you would tell the student to put their feet under their desk, put
their pencil down, and put their eyes on you. Its about being
specific, concrete, sequential, and observable.
Expected Results: Attentive students
Determine if students are being defiant or if they just didnt know
what to do
More on-task classroom
More organized student body (ex. walking in a straight line in the
hall)
When it Might be used: During a lesson
When students are in a line in the hall
Anytime directions are being given to a student or
multiple students
3. Warm/Strict
Description: This technique is about being warm and strict at
the same time. Its about being caring, funny, warm, concerned,
and nurturing and also strict, by the book, relentless, and
sometimes inflexible (pp.213, LeMov). Its about being strict
because you care about the outcome for your students.
Expected Results: The expected results of this technique
would be for a disruptive, unruly, or disobedient student to
become a positive and obedient student in your class.
When You Might Use it: When a student is disruptive
When a student is late to class
When a student doesnt have their homework on time

Sarah Spillers

When a student doesnt follow the rules

Whenever a student does not do what is expected of
them in your classroom
Once these techniques have been successfully integrated into our
classroom, I will choose a couple of more that would benefit our
classroom.
