(Present/Past) PARTICIPLES
A participle is a word that may function as a verb or adjective. It can be used in verb tenses or as a
modifier.

* PRESENT PARTICIPLE: is often used when we want to express an active action. The present
participle ends in -ing form. For example, playing, visiting, working, etc.
USED AS: 1): Continuous Tenses:

2): A Noun formed from a Verb:


3): Adjective:

Examples: He is reading a book. He was reading a book.

Examples: Reading books is fun. He likes reading books.


Example: Look at the reading boy.

4): Together with other words:

Examples: He came reading around the corner.


He sat reading in the corner. I saw him reading.

* PAST PARTICIPLE: is often used when we want to express a passive action.


The past participle ends in ed if it is a regular verb. However it may end differently if it is irregular.
For example, painted, deceived, burnt
USED AS: 1): Perfect Tenses:

Examples: He has forgotten the pencil. He had forgotten the pencil.

2): Passive Voice:

Examples: A house is built. A house was built.

3): Adjective

Example: Look at the washed car.

4): Together with other words:

Examples: The car washed yesterday is blue. He had his car washed.

Adjectival Participles are used like adjectives. They are derived from verbs and contrast with
verbal participles, which are considered to be forms of verbs rather than adjectives.
Examples:

a very frightening experience


a nicely written article
newly painted room

a very interesting book a working mother


a completely burnt house a
