The art and science of adult learning is referred to as

Andragogy. Dr. Malcolm Knowles is often referred to
as the father of andragogy. He was a well-known
educator known most prominently for his research
and theories on adult learning in which he
distinguishes the differences in learning styles of
childhood and adulthood learners. Knowles view
was that each learner possesses autonomy,
freedom, and the desire to grow intellectually.

psychological changes that occur during the maturing process. They include:
Self-concept: They progress from being dependent to becoming selfdirected.
Experience. They have accumulated experiences which provide an
increasing resource for learning.
Readiness to learn. They are more interested in learning about topics
that have immediate relevance to their lives.

How are Adult Learners Different?

Questions or
Comments:

Younger learners focus on completing courses

regardless of how they might relate to their
future goals. Because of their age, they look at
education as something that is expected to
prepare for the future. They may not have
decided on a path they might take for the future,
so they may not need to immediately apply the
information that they learn. Theyre usually
dependent on others to design their learning and
may not accept responsibility for their own
learning. They usually accept new information
without questioning or trying it out.

How are Adult Learners Different?

On the other hand, adult learners look for education to take them
from where they are to where they want to be in their lives, and
they have specific results in mind. If they feel the education they
are receiving is not going to lead to the results they want, they may
not continue.

Questions or
Comments:

Adults are self-directed and often will not depend on others for
direction. They do not accept information at face value, but may
prefer to try it out before they accept it. They want education that
directly relates to their needs at a time that is appropriate for them,
and they are willing to accept responsibility for their learning.

How are Adult Learners Different?

As they have accumulated much experience and knowledge

over the years, adults possess a variety of learning styles and
expect to be treated with respect in their interactions with their
instructors. They prefer to have clearly outlined expectations for
their courses and will likely challenge the ideas of others.

Questions or
Comments:

Adults respond well to theories and concepts that can be applied

to relevant problems. As a result, they look for a variety of
learning media and activities that can be applied through the use
of case studies and problem-solving groups.

Knowledge Check #1 Scenario: Meet Jane

Meet Jane

Questions or
Comments:

Jane is the single mother of two beautiful little girls, ages 6 and 8. At 32, she is a full-time assistant at a construction company and the sole provider for
her two little girls.
Jane is an exemplary employee who is valued and well respected. Her supervisor, as well as the project managers, often seek her advice. She knows
that a project manager position will be available within the next 18 months due to a retirement, and she really wants to get the job because it would
greatly improve her financial status. To be considered for the job, though, she will need to complete her bachelors degree. Jane was ecstatic when she
learned that she been accepted into the accelerated online business program at XYZ University.
Jane loved her first two business courses. The information she needed for her class was available online two weeks before the first day of class. The
instructors provided lots of feedback and her courses were extremely interesting. She was amazed by the fact that she could immediately apply her
new knowledge to her work environment.
Jane could not wait to begin her third course! She soon discovered, though, that the instructor did not provide the same level of information and
activity as her previous instructors. While her other instructors had posted their syllabi and other information two weeks prior to the class start, the
third instructor had not made any posts at all. On the first day of class, there was no syllabus or introduction. There were no directions on where to
begin, no assignments or deadlinesnot even an introductory email from the instructor. After several unanswered emails to the instructor and a call
to her academic advisor, the instructor finally posted a syllabus on the third day of class. However, it was for another course altogether. By the time
the correct syllabus was posted, Jane was extremely frustrated. By this point, it was too late for her to drop the course without a financial penalty, so
she decided to continue and assured herself this was not a common occurrence.
The time came for the fourth course to begin, and Jane was very hopeful it would get off to a great start. When she logged into the course on the first
day of class, not only did she discover that there was no syllabus or information posted, she also learned that the previous instructor was teaching the
course.

Knowledge Check #1 Scenario: Meet Jane

Option 1
Jane dropped the course and withdrew from the institution. She had
researched other online universities and found one with an excellent
reputation that offered the same degree she was already working on. Several
of the project managers at her company graduated from ABC University and
had great experiences with instructors. Transferring to this school would allow
her to complete her degree well within her schedule, and she would be
working with instructors who respected students.

Questions or
Comments:

Option 2
Jane decided to make the best of a bad situation and continue with the next
course even though the instructors delays in the previous course had placed
an undue hardship on her to complete her work. She had so little time
anyway to devote to her studies, when the course was delayed it made it very
hard for her to catch up.
