Large increase in Electricity Demand: Outlook based on

the Markal op2miza2on method by BPPT shows that:

During 2012-2035 period, na2onal electricity genera2on capacity (PLN

and non PLN) in BAU scenario will increase from 44.8 GW to 215 GW,
or grew by 7.1% per year. If no breakthrough in NRE + EE technologies,
Coal-red power plant will con2nues to dominate 2ll 2035 with a
share of 65% (139 GW).
Long-term view supply-demand growth and op2mal energy mix composi2on

Projec2on of technology trend : distributed, indigenous,

renewable resources.
Advanced electricity system of smart grid in city urban and
rural area: converging high quality and reliability, eciency,
demand response, and renewable integra2on.

Interconnected Systems

Two of main islands have own interconnected systems

The rests are: (about 500 clusters)
Clusters of service areas with main grids, including remote off-grid distributed
systems (Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Papua)
Small islands: clusters of grids mainly of diesel systems, off-grid distributed
systems

1978: BPPT established, engaged in various R&D ac2vi2es in NRE & EE

technologies and applica2ons; e.g.
Solar energy (PV and Thermal), Bioenergy, Geothermal, Clean Coal Technology:
Coal Upgrading, Coal liquefac2on, etc., Microhydro, Wind, OTEC, Fuel Cell, Smart
Grid etc.,
Energy Eciency in Commercial Building and Industries, mainly in the intensive
energy industry, energy audi2ng, waste heat recovery, cogenera2on, etc.

Most technologies remain in their pre-commercializa2on stage.

Their implementa2on could not take-o due to, generally, the non technology barriers, such
as condi2ons in the downstream and non integra2on of upstream and process of Energy
chain development.

Many ac2vi2es under R&D collabora2ons with na2onal or interna2onal

ins2tu2ons or agencies.
Current ac2vi2es priority in the eld of Renewable Energy sources:
Geothermal, Solar PV, Biofuel/Biomass, and also Smart Grid (Micro Transmission/
Distribu2on system)
Others (smaller budget): Wind and Ocean, Solar Thermal.

Improving ease of system opera:on through integrated control
Control data communica:on and energy storage technology
play important role in the system opera2on
VRB energy storage technology is found appropriate for high

high internal load and vulnerability to frequent system black-out.
More Renewable sources integra:on seem poten:al to support

Long-term Indonesia's energy outlook by 2035 is s:ll dominated by fossil

fuel(85%), as to compare with renewable energy (15%).
RE u:liza:on is slowly developed and most likely could not achieve the longterm na2onal energy policy target if there is no policy breaktrough. Success
story of pilo2ng or demostra2on Plants are required for jus2ca2on.
Gap of electrica:on ra:o s:ll remain, unless there is any progressive
ini2a2ves.This provide wide opportunity for RE technologies & resources
development.
Fluctuated/instability nature of VRE sources: Smart MicroGrid technology at
important role for seamless RE electricity integra2on, hence accelerate the
level of u2liza2on. Availability of beser or cost-eec2ve technology of large
scale basery is important for the near future.
High IKE (building energy consump2on intensity) more than 240 kWh/m2/year;
ecient level is less than 144 kWh/m2/year: smart building would be an
appropriate technology for promo2ng high energy eciency building.

Regulatory aspects:

Unsteady supply from Renewable Energy Sources: need advanced costeec2ve storage technology, reliable & con2nuous real-2me data of
