CANTEEN SAMPLES IN TURKISH PERIOD IN ANATOLIA

ABSTRACT

The canteen means a water bottle made of generally coarse woollen cloth, leather or metal
and used in the trips and the army and carried by hanging to your neck or waist. It has been
stated by historians that in history, canteens made of ceramics for the first time were found in
the excavations around Syria and they pertained to the last period of the Bronze Age after
3000 BC. When compared to the other forms of ceramics vessels, canteens are rarely seen
forms. Therefore, researches were conducted by the archaeologists to determine whether the
canteens existed in Anatolia before 2000 BC. As a result of the researches conducted about
the point where canteens come from as origin, an example of canteens which belongs to
before 2000 BC was identified in Euboea Island in Aegean Region. Except Asia Minor and
Anatolia, canteens cannot be easily seen anywhere. It has been understood that in Anatolia,
canteens reached a high level gradually from the early Chalcolithic period. In the light of the
researches conducted, today, it is not common to make canteens from ceramics or tile. In this
research, vessels samples shaped like tile and ceramics canteen which are considered as one
of the major forms in ceramics art in Anatolia and literature reviews and photographs of the
samples were shared.
