Where When
?
?

Saint Louis Blues America 1914

by W.C Handy

How?

Why?

They would have used a

audio tape recorder/deck/
machine. This is an analog
audio storage device. It
records and plays sounds in
the background even
articulated voices. This is
usually with the magnetic
tape or on a reel or in a
cassette. It is good with
storing recordings. Then it is
listened to trough a
gramophone / phonograph.

W.C Handy got his

inspiration for this
song while
wandering the
streets of St.Louis.

Plus there is no
amplification or no
microphones. It can directly
go to a disc cutting process.
The acoustic energy is
channelled through a horn.
Then this acoustic energy
goes to a mechanical
cutting lathe. The signals
are then sent onto a master
cylinder.

Plus when you

hear the term
gramophone /
phonograph to you
automatically know
what they are and
how they were
used. They knew
what music was
and they wanted to
create it, so they
started with the
basics and now in
the modern day it
is so much better
and improved
thanks to this
starting point from
a 100 years ago.
100 years ago was
a great example, of
if you want to make
something then go
for it and it worked
and it still did after
this time.

This made people excited

because music technology
back then was new and
people loved the idea of
music recording. It was
basic, but this made the
technology that we have
today. So without the old
fashioned recording
equipment we wouldnt be
able to record to today. It
was just a simple idea that
grew and grew and
expanded into something
special, like technology 50
years ago.

Music 100 years

ago is appreciated
today because
making and
producing music
had to come from
somewhere and
this is where it
came from.

My Bonnie by
The Beatles &
Tony Sheridan

Where When
?
?

England 1962

How?

Why?

Between the late 1950s and

the early 1960s music
producers could add special
effects and other ethereal
sounds, for example, echo and
reverb. These effects are still
used today because they
create atmosphere to
recordings. They also enhance
the music well. Plus back then
there was a reflective
basement called the echo
chamber. This room was only
used to record music that has
echo in it.

My Bonnie had been

chosen because of
its popularity with
Hamburg's sailors; it
was part of The
Beatles' live set.

Moreover signals would sent

to a speaker and then the
microphone would pick up all
of the sound that is in the
room. The mixer could mix
new wet signals. These
signals were recorded with the
original dry recordings. This
was great people loved it and
still love it today. Adding in
effects adds more feelings and
emotions to a piece of music.
Because of this the 21st
centuries technology allows
you to add effects from DAWs,
back then DAWs didnt exist.
However the very first mixers
helped today to create these
DAWs. Some people might
even use the old mixers still. In
addition the first set of stereo
headphones were made in
1958 by a Milwaukee-based
jazz musician called John C
Koss. These headphones
were designed for listeners
from all over the world to enjoy
the new and exiting fangled
stereo LPs. Because of all of
this above this era has shaped
the music industry for life, for
example, music 20 years ago
was even better.

50 years ago music

changed. When the
music changed it
improved too, for
example, more
special effects were
made and they were
very popular and
they still are. By this
eras music progress
our music now is
better quality and
has more key
features, for
example, now we
can add in samples,
midi instruments and
many more different
things.
Furthermore this era
is a good era for
music, everyone
loves The Beatles no
matter their age,
their music is very
known.
Plus they have
helped the music
industry by
producing great
music for all to listen
to.
Lastly they have also
helped musicians
because as the years
go by more and more
musicians are being
discovered because of
their knowledge of
music performance and
technology. In the 80s
music technology was
made awesome! (See
the next table to find
out why).

Public
Japan
Pressure by
Yellow
Magic
Orchestra

1980

How?

Why?

The first commercial compact disc was

produced on 17th August 1982. (Once the
music is recorded onto the cd is can be
played on a cd player. The first cd
recording was Claudio Arrau performing
Chopin waltzes.

This was
Yellow Magic
Orchestras
first live
performance
and they
used drum
machines.
This is
because
there are so
many
different
genres to the
song and
they are:
Electronic,
dance,
electro, rock,
techno,
experimental
art rock, new
wave,
synthpop,
world Asian.

When you record things on tape you can

play them on a Video Cassette Recorder.
There are so many more things that were
invented, for example, the Roland
TR-808.This piece of equipment is a drum
machine and has professional features, for
example, you can create hip-hop demos
on it.

However the very first drum machine

was made in 1932. They were very
hard to use, but they wanted to find
something different. Drum machines
now are more successful and easy to
use. So, this old ones created a new
beginning for all drum machines today.
Going back to the 80s there were some
keyboards that were invented, for
example, the Yamaha DX7 (a FM
synthesis digital synth. It was the first
digital synth that was successful. Plus
the recordings were excellent,
especially for pop music) and the Korg
M1 (a 16 voice and 8 part multitimbral
music workstation. It has a MDII
sequencer with a wide variety of
sounds to chose from. It out sold the
Yamaha DX7 and the Roland D-50 and
it became the most top-selling digital
synth in that time). These pieces of
equipment are similar to ones that we
have now. They were the starting point
for smart keyboards. People loved this
idea and wanted to make it work for the
musicians in the future to enjoy their
music producing. Keyboards 10 years
ago had more effects and instruments
to use.

This shows
us that it is
simple and
easy to
make music
with a drum
machine if
you put your
mind to it.

Rule The
World by
Take That

England

2007

How?

Why?

9 years ago is very much like the present day

because even though the first DAW (Digital
Editing System) come out in 1979 they are still
very popular. Music now is listened to in many
ways and they are: Spotify, YouTube,
Soundcloud, Apple Music/iTunes, Pulseradio,
heartthis, mixcloud, MP3, phone and many
more. The music listened to from headphones
or speakers/internal speakers.

Rule The World

is the 1st song
written by Take
That. It was for
a film and this
film is Stardust
directed by
Matthew
Vaughn and it
based on Neil
Gaimans novel
Stardust. The
film was made
in 2007 and is a
romantic fantasy
adventure film
from paramount
pictures.

Plus the music is published and shared on

social media sites, such as, Facebook and
Twitter. This has made the public aware about
their favourite artists or bands new singles and
albums.
Moreover sampling and sequencing is key to
the music of today, for example, modern pop
recordings. Cubase is an example of an early
version of a sequencing software that would
allow you to change things while you are
creating and editing your music. To make this
successful modern recording studios are
normally combined with digital recording
methods that has analogue aesthetics. The
recording equipment now is very high quality
and is also long lasting, for example, the AudioTechnica ATM510 Cardioid Dynamic
Microphone has a 5 year warranty. This good
because this microphone allows you to have
hours and hours of recording time, it couldnt
be any easier to record your music and vocals.
Music now sounds very professional because
of the high technology of the speakers, for
example, the Yamaha H57 Active Studio
Monitor Speaker is a 2 way bass-reflex biamplified nearfield studio monitor. It also has a
6.5 inch cone woofer and a 1 inch done
tweeter.

Rule the world

is a
Pop rock, adult
contemporary
song. It is the
5th single from
4th studio album
Beautiful World
(2006). It was
released in the
UK on 21st
October 2007
via digital
download and
as a CD single
the following
day.

People love
this song
because
pop songs
are popular.
Furthermore it has a 60W LF and a 35W HF bi- Take That
is a great
amp system. This a very high-performance
piece of technology because of its 95W power band and
amplification. This makes it great for studio
they have
recordings and editing. I would definitely say
created
that music technology has improved over the
amazing
years and now because of the fantastic
musicians in the past we can explore music in music with
a whole new way. This is because the
todays
technology compared to a 100 years ago is
technology,
very slick. It is fun and exiting to use and your
so it
learn a lot from just from playing around with
the softwares and other equipment. Our music possible to
experience is at a whole new level now thanks produce
music in
to these musicians and I am very grateful that
they have made my work in the music industry this way, so
successful and worthwhile.
happy
composing!

I have learnt a lot form doing this project. I have learnt about the history of music
and how it influences people in society. I have a better understanding of music
recording techniques and how I can use them in my music and other audio
products. So by my doing this project my music producing skills have improved
and developed. Also by me researching about other decades music I can now
vary my music into different eras. Happy music producing!
