1.2 Introduction
This manual describes the installation, adjustment, operation and maintenance of Isoil's automatic
valve type "ISOVALVE".
This valve can be adapted to accomplish different functions even at the same time; in fact the
control circuit can be fitted with different accessories that, adequately combined, can make the
base valve to perform different tasks, e.g.:

One stage shut-off

Two stages shut-off

Non-return

Flow limiting control

Differential pressure control

Pressure reducing

High level shut-off

and more others.

In this manual we will always refer to the control scheme reported in drw.4564/M, that is non
return, shut-off, flow limiting and two stage shut-off valve

1.3 Description
Automatic valves controlled by solenoid valves are usually paired with volumetric meters fitted with
preset control, or with electronic counter that controls its opening and closing; a typical application
is the fitting upstream or downstream a meter counter on loading plants for tank-trucks, or for
product transfer from tank to tank.
The valve is fitted as below (see attached drw.4564/M):

Base valve (1)

NO Solenoid Valve (22)

NC Solenoid valve (21)

Pressure reduction control (6)

No-return valve (23)

1.4 Working principles

The base valve is an hydraulically actuated diaphragm valve. Its main components are:
1) The body
2) The diaphragm assembly
3) The cover
The diaphragm assembly is the only moving part in the valve; it is made up of an elastomer
diaphragm and a gasket blocked by a disc retainer. When a pressure is applied above the
diaphragm, the assembly makes a seal with the valve seat that stops the flow.
The diaphragm makes an insulated room in the upper part of the valve, thus separating the
command pressure from the line pressure.

1.5 Control circuit

When solenoid valves (21) and (22) are both energised the automatic valve is fully open. The
maximum valve opening will be proportional to the adjustment of the pressure reduction control
(19)
The pressure reduction control (6) is used to obtain a constant outlet pressure of valve (1). This
way every pressure change upstream the main valve causes a shift of the diaphragm assembly so
that the main flow rate remains constant.
When the solenoid valve (22) is de-energised, the main valve reduces automatically its flow rate
until the low flow state is reached.
When solenoid valve (21) is also de-energised all flow is sent on the upper part of the diaphragm,
causing a quick closing of the seal.

3 Servicing
3.1 Preventive maintenance
Valve requires no lubrication. A periodic inspection is however advisable to check if crust or
damages are affecting the efficiency of the valve.
For the installation follow the instructions below; refer to dwg. 4564/M.
1) Before the installation of the valve it is suggested to clean thoroughly the pipings to remove
dirt, crusts and other foreign particles.
2) It is recommended to install root valves at the inlet and outlet to ease servicing operations
3) Make sure that the flow direction through the valve is in accordance with the direction
indicated by the arrow on the valve itself.
4) Leave space enough around the valve to ease access for adjustment, servicing and
disassembly.
5) It is suggested to arrange the valve horizontally and with the cover on the top side; this
arrangement makes easier the servicing and inspection of the valve. However, a vertical
arrangement can be used.
6) After the installation of the valve and its control systems, before the adjustment operations,
vent out all the air from the cover chamber and from the piping by loosening the screw (13)
fitted on the stem valve(Dwg.761M).
7) Make sure that the electrical connections of the solenoid valves are in accordance with the
data printed on its plate.
8) If the valve is paired with flow meter, connect the solenoid valves with the preset or with the
electronic flow meter so that:
- Solenoid valves (21) and (22) are both energised when the main valve is fully open
- Only solenoid valve (21) is energised when in low flow condition
-

Solenoid valves (21) and (22) are both de-energised when the valve is closed

3.2 Adjustment
Here follows the procedure to adjust the flow rate values on the conditions of low and
high flow rate.
NOTE: after the initial installation, before operating the valve, its necessary to follow completely
the adjustment procedure; the adjustment must also be performed if the system is modified

3.3 Preliminar steps (refer to dwg.4564/M)

1) With the line in pressure vent out all the air from the control circuit by loosening the screw
fitted on the stem valve at pos. (13) (dwg 761M).

ISOIL IMPIANTI S.p.A.

Page 5
Code MA/0008/62/EN/01

2) Energise both solenoid valves (21) and (22); act on the Pressure Control Valve (6) by
loosening the jam nut, then turn the screw fully clockwise to keep the main valve fully open

3.4 Low flow rate (1st stage) (refer to dwg.4564/M)

1) Energise only solenoid valve (21).
2) To obtain a higher flow rate turn the steam valve guide rod (19) counterclockwise.
3) To obtain a lower flow rate turn the steam valve guide rod (19) clockwise.

3.5 High Flow (2nd stage) (refer to dwg.4564/M)

1) Energise solenoid valve (22) too.
2) Turn slowly counterclockwise the stem valve regulation threaded cylinder (19) to reduce the
high flow, until the desired flow rate is reached.
3) Turn slowly clockwise the stem valve regulation threaded cylinder (19) to increase the high
flow.

4 Maintenance
CAUTION
All parts under pressure must be released before disassembling the
valve or its accessories for adjustment, inspection, servicing or
substitution of its components.
Also make sure that all electric or electronic part, if present, are
disconnected from its power supply.
Please refer to dwg.7695-7855 form servicing of the main valve.
ISOVALVE type main valves do not require lubrication. However, a periodic inspection schedule
should be established to determine if the fluid is damaging the rubber parts of the valve.

4.1 Disassembly
CAUTION: Disconnect power supply to the solenoid valves before disassembly operations.
1)
2)
3)
4)
5)

Loosen the fittings on the main valve cover

Remove the nuts (6) and the washers (7)
Remove the main valve cover (2)
Remove the diaphragm (14) with main valve assembly connected to it
Remove nut (10) and diaphragm washer (10) and diaphragm (14), backing washer (9) and
obturator (4) can now be separated from the shaft (3).
6) Remove Q-Rings (seal) (7). Q-Ring (seal) (16) is inserted in a dovetail-shaped recess in the
valve guide retainer and hence requires careful removal.

4.2 Reassembly
Each part of the valve must be inspected for cut marks, scratches, corrosion or damage by foreign
particles.
The diaphragm must not show any scratch or cut marks on the surface.
Reassembly is the exact reversal of the disassembling procedure. If the backing washer has been
replaced, check the conditions of the gasket (15).

4.3 Solenoid valves

Solenoid valves do not require any servicing. In case of failure the whole solenoid valve must be
replaced

Valve does not close upon deenergizing both solenoids and

continues to leak.

Possible cause

NO solenoid valve is defective: it

does not operate upon energizing.
A faulty NO solenoid valve permits
the high upstream pressure to
enter into the valve cover
chamber, even when it is
energized. This does not allow
complete
draining
of
cover
chamber and, therefore, the valve
locks at a slow flow rate.
NC solenoid valve is defective and
allows draining of the cover
chamber. A faulty NC valve allows
the draining and, therefore, the
valve continues to deliver at a
faster rate.
O-ring (pos.15) seal at the seat is
damaged
