Big Data Trends

Big Data in 2016

Last year the big data market centered squarely on technology
around the Hadoop ecosystem. 2015s been all about putting
big data to work through use cases shown to generate ROI from
increased revenue and productivity and lower risk. As we move
into 2016, big data continues its march beyond the chasm. Well
see more mainstream companies adopting big data and IoT, with
traditionally conservative and skeptic organizations starting to
take the plunge.
Read on to learn more about these six emerging big data trends.

Big Data Will Be Put to Work

Big data will be put to work and data blending will be bigger and
more important than we could ever have imagined back in
2010 when we were just getting started with Hadoop.
Increasingly sophisticated demands means
the pressure to innovate here will
remain high in 2016. Consumers, for
example, will increasingly expect
retailers to offer highly customized buying recommendations at
the right time through the right
device, followed through with
seamless and secure e-commerce
transactions. Data blendings
potential in every area from automotive telemetry to medical science
to national security is enormous,
and were only at the beginning.

Internet of Things Is Getting Real!

IoT will create anywhere from $3.9 trillion to $11.1 trillion in economic value by
2025. Use cases driving this transformation include Predictive Maintenance,
Smart Cities and Smart Homes. Large industrial companies that
make, move, sell and support physical things are plugging
sensors attached to their things into the internet. This
presents myriad new challenges and opportunities in
the areas of data governance, standards, health and
safety, security and supply chain - to name but
a few. Companies must start planning now
or risk being left behind.

Next Generation Analytics Will Be Embedded

and Delivered at the Point of Impact
Executives view analytics as the top strategic
enabler to grow their companys revenue and
productivity and cut costs. While some still view
the classic BI model of a data analyst using a
tool outside the application flow to analyze
historical data as being somewhat helpful, they
increasingly regard the next generation of
analytics where business users consume
analytics through familiar, day-to-day business
applications as mission-critical.

The Cool Stuff Is Getting Ready for Prime Time

The explosion of cool new tools like Spark, Docker, Kafka, Lucene, Solr emerging open source tools
designed to enable large-scale, high-volume analytics on petabytes of data are moving from the
awkward teenager phase to the bearded hipster phase! These tools are critical to driving faster
innovation and are becoming more mature as we speak. We pride ourselves on leading the open
source innovation and incorporating these exciting technologies into our platform while
ensuring these technologies are hardened for use by our enterprise customers. Early
this year we announced Spark integration with the Pentaho platform.

Cloud Is Emerging as a Preferred Deployment

Model for Big Data
At our last Strategic Advisory Board session almost all members had
either deployed their big data applications in the cloud, or were
planning to. This includes the stock exchange regulator
FINRA, which operates in a highly secure environment,
handling and looking for anomalies in a whopping
75 billion transactions every day. Companies
want the option to deploy big data applications either behind the firewall, 100
percent in the cloud or a hybrid, private/
public cloud environment. Pentaho
announced its AWS capability this year
and we are supporting our customers
as they look to the optimize
deployment models across
workloads and use cases.

User Experience Will Be A Major Investment Area

User experience will be a major investment area in the big data analytics ecosystem.
This starts with cloud, but goes further into building better user experiences for
streaming and predictive analytics. Its also about integrating new, secure
technologies like facial recognition to reassure users that their data is
safe and trustworthy. Moving towards real-time speed is also a key
part of the user experience. Our customers tell us that
Hadoop is still too hard, and are hoping that the vendors invest in making
the experience easier. The easier we
all make it, the more use cases
we unlock for the enterprise.
