Lecture 15
Welded Drawings

Welding

Used to join metal by melting them along a

common edge
40+ welding processes currently used
Primary processes

Gas welding
Oxyacetylene gas is burned
Arc welding

Electrical arc between electrode and

workpieces
Resistance welding
Resistance from high amperage electricity that
is sent across the workpieces

Welding of Various Metals and Alloys

Weld Terminology

Fillet and Groove Weld Types

Welding Symbols

Specifies the type, location and size of the

weld
Weld Symbol:

type of weld

Welding Symbol:

method of representing the weld on the drawing

Weld Symbols
Describes the type of weld that is to be used

Supplementary Weld Symbols

Used to modify the basic weld symbols

Welding Symbol

Tail of the Welding Symbol

Specifies the welding process,
reference or supplementary
information

10

Arrow Location

The arrow points to the arrow side

The opposite side is called the other side
This replaces the near and far side terminology

11

Arrow Location
Some symbols have no side significance

Orientation of the weld symbol

Vertical line is always on the left

12

Break in the Arrow Line

When only one member is to be prepared, the

arrow line has a break (bend) in it.
Arrow points to the member that is to be prepared.
Break may be omitted when:

There is no preference in which member is prepared

It is obvious which member is to be prepared

13

Break in the Arrow Line

14

Field Weld Symbol

Used when a weld is to be completed in the field.

Field weld symbol:

intersection of the arrow & reference line

always above the reference line
points to the tail

15

Weld-All-Around Weld Symbol

Used when a weld is to go around a joint.

Weld-All-Around symbol:

intersection of the arrow & reference line.

not required on pipe joints.

16

Combining Weld Symbols

A weld can be composed of multiple weld types (on the same side)
Weld symbols are appended to each other.

Arrow side Bevel with fillet weld finish.

Other side Fillet.

17

Contours Obtained by Welding

The shape (contour) of the weld can be specified

Contour symbol is added to the weld symbol

18

Post Weld Finish Symbols

The finish can be specified

Finish symbol is added to the weld symbol

19

Multiple Reference Lines

A sequence of operations is specified using a

series of reference lines.
The first operation is given on the reference line
that is nearest to the arrow.

20

Design of Welded Joints

Examples of different corner joints:

Size of the weld is based on the thinnest member.

21

Design of Welded Joints

Various joints have different manufacturing costs
preparation and amount of weld material.

Position of the joint can also effect cost

22

Design of Welded Joints

Size of the weld is based on the thinnest member of a joint.

23

Fillet Weld Symbols

Dimensions are in front of the fillet weld symbol.

If there are welds on both sides of the joint, then both
dimensions are always given.
Dimension can be left off if there is a general note:

ALL FILLET WELDS .25 IN. UNLESS OTHERWISE

NOTED

24

Fillet Weld Symbol

If the leg size is different, the dimension is written as A X B

Size A (Vert. - .25) and B (Horiz. - .5) given inthe drawing.

25

Fillet Weld Symbol

Length of the fillet:

After the weld symbol Fillet weld size = 0.25, weld length =
16. Weld starts 2 from the edge.

Arrow pointing at the weld area.

Weld specifications along dimensioning line.

26

Fillet Weld Symbol

Length of the fillet:

With dimension lines:

Both ends Continue 6mm fillet weld for 200 mm.
For 6600mm span 6mm fillet weld 50mm long with
300mm pitch.

27

Fillet Weld Symbol

Pitch of intermittent fillet welding is given after the length.
