1. Introduction/Set/Advanced Organizers

- Begin the class with everyone sitting in a

circle on the ground with a pillow or
blanket beneath them.
- Hook/intro: We have begun the class
outside today because today's lesson will
be on spirituality. People experience

spirituality in several different ways,

however many people find it easier to
connect and learn about their own
spirituality through interaction with nature.
It is my hope that by completing our
learning out in a natural setting we will
have a greater connection to our own
spiritual selves thus, creating a more
meaningful learning experience.
I would like everyone to sit silently for a
few minutes. Please close your eyes and
take this time to relax. You may reflect on
your day or week. You may think about a
place that makes you happy. Spend this
time with yourself, relax into the silence.
(5 minutes)
2. Clarifying/Creating-Understanding/ConceptDevelopment

- While learning about our own spirituality

we will be connecting with and
understanding those who first occupied the
land we are sitting on. That of the First
Nations People.
- Aboriginal and First Nations groups often
share their knowledge through oral story
telling. We will begin with everyone
sharing a brief description of an image or
story that comes to mind when they hear
the word spirituality. We will use a talking
stick that we will pass around the circle.
Only the person holding the talking stick
will have the permission and authority to
speak. (5 minutes)
- Thank you for sharing your stories.
- Now I will read out a description of the
Aboriginal view of spirituality. Listen
closely, try to pick out key words or
concepts that make make sense to you or
challenge your thinking. (5 minutes)

3. Coach/Guided-Practice/Seatwork

- Now I will put you in groups of 2. Your

task is to examine the description I just
read. I will give you your own copy. You
must outline they key concepts of
Aboriginal spirituality. We will reconvene
in 5 minutes to share our answers. (5
minutes) *Walk around and discuss with
groups. Probe using in-depth questioning.
Try to get them to think deeper and critical
analyze assumptions they are making.

- Everyone will take turn sharing their

answers. At the end, take the time to
discuss the differences in answers. (5
minutes)
4. Closure/Summary

- To end, I want everyone to find a partner.

I want you to reflect on everything we
have learned today about our own views of
spirituality and the views of Aboriginal
people on spirituality. Do agree or disagree
with these beliefs? Are their any
connections to your own beliefs? Why or
Why Not? (5 minutes)
- End with summarizing objectives and
noting the importance of these
understandings in our own and our
students' well being.

5. Review/Assessment

- Students will be assessed through

conversation and observation during this
lesson. Assessment observations will be
guided through the interpreted objectives
created at the beginning of this lesson.
