3.1 Health Hazards

~1) Health Hazards of Liquified Gases

are their toxicity , oxygen deficiency
and low temperatures.
~2) Modes by which Liquified Gas
cargoes and their vapours may be
toxic.
~3) Toxic properties of Inhibitors.
~4) Toxic properties of Inert Gas.

~5) How combustion of Cargo products

or construction materials may
produce toxic products.
~6) Acute and Chronic effects of
toxicity , systematic poisons and
irritants.
~7) Lists and describes the criteria by
which toxicity is measured and
expressed.
~8) Asphyxia and its symptoms.

~10) Frost Bite and its symptoms.

~11) Chemical Burns and lists cargoes
caustic to human skin.
~12) Information given in the Health
Data Column of the ICS Cargo Data
Sheet.

3.2 First Aid Treatment

~First Aid Procedures for accidents

involving
Cargo are given in the cargo data
sheets.
~Liquified Gas tankers carrying toxic
cargoes should have medical first aid
equipment for accidents involving
those cargoes on board.
~This equipment includes oxygen

~Master or Responsible officer should

be familiar with the use of medical
first aid equipment.
~Professional medical treatment
should always be sought in cases
where casualities have been
overcome by toxic and/or irritant
vapours.
~Importance of labelling a patient
before removal from the vessel.

~IMO Medical First Aid Guide for use in

accidents involving dangerous
goods(MFAG) gives information
regarding medical treatment.
~MFAG gives detailed information
about signs and symptoms ,first aid
and the administering the antidotes.

Reactivity

~1) Liquified Gas cargo may react in a

number of ways,such as :
- with itself
- with air
- with water
- with another cargo
- with other materials

~2) Self Reaction and list of Gas cargoes

that may self react .
~ 3) Precautions against self reaction.
~4) Reaction with air and list of gas
cargoes that may react with air.
~5) Precautions against reaction with air.
~6) Reactions with water and list of gas
cargoes that may react with water.

~ 7) Common precautions against

reaction with water.
~8) Cargo Compatibility and list of
gas cargoes that are incompatible.
~9) Precautions against mixing of
incompatible cargoes.
~10) Some Gas cargoes may react
with materials and substance such as
:
- tank material

- gaskets
- cargo hoses
- inert gas
- cargo compressor oils
- cargo pump seal oil
~ 11) Precautions against reactions
listed above.
~12) Reactivity data for each liquified
gas cargo are given in ICS cargo data
sheet .

3.4 Flammability and explosion

hazards
~1) Most Liquified gas cargoes are
flammable.
~2) It is not liquids, but vapours
emitted from them , that burn.
~3) Liquified Gas cargoes are carried
at or close to their boiling point and
give off vapours readily.
~4) Flammable vapours can ignite and

~5) Certain cargo vapours can burn

and, if ignited, without being mixed
with air.
~6) Definition of Flashpoint and
describe ways of determining it.
~7) Definition of Auto Ignition
Temperature.
~8) Combustion is a chemical reaction
and describes the process of burning
of hydrocarbons.

~10) Flammable range will be different

for different cargoes.
~11) Flammability Chart
~12) the effect of increasing or
decreasing the proportion of oxygen
on the flammable limits.
~13) Fire and explosion data for each
liquified gas cargo are given in the
ICS cargo data sheets.

3.5 Repairs and Hot Work

~1) No hot work can be carried out

unless a permit to work is issued.
~2) hot work includes the use of power
tools.
