Considering Design Choices

When discussing design communication and articulating the rationale of my work I

believe they go hand and hand. That is why I have chosen to do a video
compilation. My topic is one for people and the manner in which I communicate it to
the people is important. My main demographic is college students themselves. With
students spending an average of 10 hours on their phones, 4 of those hours being
social media, my ability to compile a strong and accurate statement in one minute
maximum is necessary. By squeezing my message in this time constraint it will
allow my message to be broadcasted on all social media platforms. This in turn
broadens my demographic, I am now able to reach the parents, friends and families
of the students themselves. I also need to remain mindful of the persons featured in
the video compilation. I think recognizable faces and faces of ordinary people will
allow the message to come off serious but relatable. With people of great statue
and knowledge making strong statements on my issue and ordinary people
conveying the same message I am in hopes that the message comes across
receivable. I also want to be straight to the point. I think that the world has enough
grey areas on issues that affect the well-being of society. By being straight forward
on the topic I am allowing the viewer to build a conclusion for themselves. The
purpose of my video compilation is not to change the mindset of the viewer, but to
raise the question of truth. Stating facts and building connections is my job,
deciding the conclusion and truths is the viewers job.
I believe that some people approach situations with the good of the people in mind.
And others approach with the good of themselves in mind. For example I created a
persona named Francise Hall. Francise has had the pleasure of teaching at multiple
institutions and interact with a variety of students. Because of her vast knowledge
in the classroom setting and her PH.D in Economical Science she believes she can
draw a connection between Americas educational and economical divides. Having
been a single mother raising four children that would go on to become college
graduates, the luxury of not having financial burdens and sacrifices wasnt a luxury
she was familiar with. Because of Francises background she would approach my
topic in a different manor than Josh. Josh comes from a household that was led by a
strong man, and a submissive wife. Money has never than a worry in Joshs life, he
is accustomed to the finer things in life. Joshs father thought with a Darwinism
mentality and would soon prove clear to have passed those same thinkings to his
son. Because of Joshs way of thinking prior to the conversation of free tuition his
mind is made up. The less fortunate dont thrive not because they cant but
because they arent supposed too. These two completely different sets of thinking
are similar in that they are a reflection of where both persons comes from and the
struggles they have gone through.
The initial distraction I anticipate or the very reasons I think people will watch. I
plan to use some celebrates that have spoken on the issue. By doing so I think my
project is vulnerable to both good and bad reactions. When using celebrate to make
a political stance you have to consider that persons background. Society is very

opinionated and will dismiss the conversation completely if the wrong person is
delivering it. No matter their stance or accuracy on the issue, I must choose
someone that wont take away from the issue at hand. The next distraction I believe
will occur is my usage of diagrams. During my brief minute complication I was
debating on a visual. The chart I wanted to use is very easy to ready and interrupt,
but it requires the viewer to read and interrupt. With such a small window I dont
want to leave time for someone to have to read and I cant continue the message as
they read because I run the chance on my audience missing something. Though the
chart has valuable and relevant information, I only see it as a distraction in the long
run. And last but not least simplicity. Going into this project I felt that the simpler
the better. But now I am starting to realize that by staying really simple in my
visual, context and style I may cause a distraction or lack of interest. By not having
eye catching designs and transitions the viewer may not remain focused on the
video. So to fix the issue I have decided to try and build focal points. Points on in
clip that the eye will automatically go to.
The reactions I anticipate on my work will be disbelieve, questioning the facts and
truths, a want to learn more, and a want to build your own conclusions on the
issues. In order to articulate my rationale I believe I will need to connect the dots on
multiple levels. Solid facts will be necessary, with all opinions left on the sidelines.
The facts that will need to be addressed will be the high school graduation rates,
college graduate rates, unemployment rates, sociology research and possibly
incarceration rates. When I write my defense paper I plan to use sociology as my
starting point, from there I will connect a childs sociology mindset to his
educational experience. This will move me forward to high school graduating rates,
seeing as though they are the closets on the equality spectrum. At this point I will
place those statistics up against college graduation statists. That will led into the
economical aspect of the issue. Here I will take a step back from college graduation
and asset the issues that are occurring and keeping students out of college. By
simultaneously discussing statistics I will build my rationale, and the reader will do
so as well. I will control the conversation by remaining accurate. I will use national
level statistics to build my argument. I plan to leave no rock unturned when
explaining my train of thought. I think that by arguing the facts I leave no room for
error or assumptions. This form will offer clarity and precision to the reader so that
they too may generate a reasonable and substantial argument. Again, my plan for
this portion of the assignment is not to advertise what I believe is right, the purpose
is to offer the people accurate information in an easy form to build question in
them.
