Grime is thought to of emerged for urban UK areas around
the beginning of the 2nd millennium and is linked to genres
such as UK garage and jungle
The main pioneers for this genre would be Wiley, dizzy
rascal, Kano & Skepta with BBK, Newham Generals, roll
deep, so solid and 67 being the most iconic groups
associated with this genre.
Grime emerged from London with its origins on UK pirate
radio stations such as Rinse FM, Deja Vu FM, Freeze 92.7
and Raw Mission.
The usage of male musicians speaking in a similar pace to
the beat of garage music introduced the similar links to rap
found in the US however the beats used were faster paced
and lyrics used were repeated with a minimal amount of
meaning behind them.
The archived footage will switch to the plan b music video and
other negative videos linking to grime.
Grime music followed similar footsteps to hip hop music as
different areas had their own style of rap which caused

clashes between artists, its obvious to realise that

competition would arise between artists representing
areas .The negative approach to grime started as soon as
their lyrics had a meaning some condemning the law
system, some involving distasteful language and the
inclusion of descriptive analysis of past crime events.Kim
Howells is someone who condemns this genre deeply saying
quotes such as Idiots like the So Solid Crew are glorifying
gun culture and violence he also been quoted for saying
For years I have been very worried about these hateful
lyrics that these boasting macho idiot rappers come out
with. It is a big cultural problem. It has created a culture
where killing is almost a fashion accessory. Music videos
were used to show the artists could producppres linking
lyrics on the spot however this soon stemmed to videos
similar to other genres with a narrative or meaning. This
would give viewers an insight to their lifestyle, which would
horrify parents and appeal to some youths.
