Overview
Electrical energy is a key factor in the sustainable development of Mediterranean countries.
Moreover, in the future, the integration of electrical systems in the area of the Mediterranean will
be crucial within a legal and regulatory framework that will deliver secure, sustainable and
affordable energy for years to come. Never before has the world of energy faced such deeply
radical changes so quickly. These are real challenges, imposed by technological changes that are
underway in the geopolitical, economic and social spheres.
From the perspective of technological and market changes concerning the role of fossil fuels (not
only for the new opportunities offered by the gas sector), there is a need to focus on the
increasing penetration of non programmable renewable sources (in particular sun and wind), on
innovation in transport systems and the electrical industry, on the need to reduce pollution and
environmental impact, on the new climatic requirements, and more.
It is a real revolution, and the Mediterranean is at the centre at a time of obvious economic and
social turmoil that has given rise simultaneously to concerns and hopes. The area of the
Mediterranean is characterized by an unevenly distributed population; furthermore, in countries
with different development levels, the population is growing and there may not always be access
to services and sufficient energy to satisfy all expectations and needs.
This prospect represents a strategic need for the Mediterranean area and therefore merits great
attention. To realize these hopes, there is only one way: to collaborate to build common solutions
that ensure greater security and greater development.
With this as its focus AEIT is organising an international conference: A Sustainable Development in
the Mediterranean Area, to be held on 14th16th October, 2015 in Naples.
Contributions will come from relevant institutions, enterprises and professional associations in the
form of round tables, speeches and personal memories, all of which will be divided into the
following thematic areas:
The Mediterranean
The Euro-Mediterranean Supergrid
Mega Cities and Smart Cities
Research on the Euro-Mediterranean Perspective
During the conference, we will discuss how a cohesive vision might combine the best possible
future electricity market and network integrationsdetermining investment decisionswith
todays national capacity mechanisms in order to reduce the huge investment uncertainties which
market actors face today. A cohesive vision will connect the theories of smart grids, demand
response and copious good data to integrate renewable energy into the market.
