Unit Planning for the Integration of Technology Template

Section 1
Content Area: Immunology
Unit Title: Immunology and Disease
Name of Course/Programme Level: Immunology and Disease/ Level 2
Unit Summary
This unit focuses on fostering lifelong understanding of the application and concepts of innate and
adaptive immunology, in addition to the role of the immune system in human diseases. Major topics
covered include (i) the immune response (protective as well as harmful aspects) with emphasis on
immunity, immunization, hypersensitivity, autoimmunity and immunodeficiency, (ii) tissue/organ
transplantation, tumor immunology and diagnostic immunology/serology.
Primary interdisciplinary connections:
Immunology and Disease is not a solitary unit and will make connection with other disciplines such as
Biochemistry, Hematology, Call biology and Chemistry
Themes/Focus Questions:
What is the immune system?
How is the immune system structured and what is the function of its components?
How does vaccines work?
How does the immune system relate to disease?
What is the effect of the immune system on organ transplantation?
Unit Rationale:
Immunology is the study of how the body defends itself against disease. This course is designed to help
students understand how the immune system works and how it is tricked into attacking its own tissue,
leading to diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes or allergy

Section 2
Learning/Attainment Targets (Broad goals)

Related Content (write brief content

statements)

1: Students should know the components of the

immune system and how their synchronous activity
protects the body

The immune system is composed of cells, organs

and tissues whose cumulative action is to protect
the body from infection.

2: Students should know and demonstrate an

appreciation for innate and acquired immune response

The innate arm of the immune acts as the first

line of defense while the acquired arm develops
after exposure to pathogens. Acquired immune
response are more specific and more aggressive
with subsequent exposure

3: Students should demonstrate an understanding of

the impact of the immune system on organ transplant

Successful tissue transplant requires matching

tissue been transplanted to a recipient with the
closest HLA match to reduce the chance of
rejection
