Content Area: Immunology
Unit Title: Immunology and Disease
Name of Course/Programme Level: Immunology and Disease/ Level 2
Unit Summary
This unit focuses on fostering lifelong understanding of the application and concepts of innate and
adaptive immunology, in addition to the role of the immune system in human diseases. Major topics
covered include (i) the immune response (protective as well as harmful aspects) with emphasis on
immunity, immunization, hypersensitivity, autoimmunity and immunodeficiency, (ii) tissue/organ
transplantation, tumor immunology and diagnostic immunology/serology.
Primary interdisciplinary connections:
Immunology and Disease is not a solitary unit and will make connection with other disciplines such as
Biochemistry, Hematology, Call biology and Chemistry
Themes/Focus Questions:
What is the immune system?
How is the immune system structured and what is the function of its components?
How does vaccines work?
How does the immune system relate to disease?
What is the effect of the immune system on organ transplantation?
Unit Rationale:
Immunology is the study of how the body defends itself against disease. This course is designed to help
students understand how the immune system works and how it is tricked into attacking its own tissue,
leading to diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes or allergy
