Lesson Aim:

Students will apply a systems thinking approach to the lesson and understand how robots are programmed and where robots are been used today
so they can envision needs for newer robots, to meet a need.
Content strand(s) with corresponding Sub-Strand(s):
Digital Technologies Processes and Production Skills
Content Description(s) with corresponding Elaboration(s):
Explain how student solutions and existing information systems meet common personal, school or community needs (ACTDIP012).
Investigating how information systems are used in communities and explaining what needs are being met.
Students Prerequisite knowledge / understanding / concepts / skills:

Req.
Orientating Phase / Introduction
Students should be able
Class discuss what systems thinking approach is. They review the
to demonstrate their
learnings from the previous technology lesson, where they watched
knowledge of a systems
video clips of robots in todays world doing its job of making money.
thinking approach
They discuss the use of robots. Students recognise that robots

have an input, a process then an output. They discuss how robots
mins
are related to this process then discuss pros and cons of
technologies like this.

to apply systems thinking
to complete tasks in the
activities

Students should be able

to reflect on their learning
by writing a reflection on
what they know about
systems thinking

mins

Group one: Students play The Maze (https://studio.code.org/s/20hour/stage/2/puzzle/1) which is a digital resource that introduces
first-timers to programming and allows students to explore
foundations of computer science. It allows users to move their
character based on commands you put together for it.

12 x Computers
Cups, papaers to
write
instructions
down on.

Group two: students write down codes that represent a movement,

then their partner must follow the code to produce the designers
desired outcome. Students will begin to appreciate how digital
technologies work. Showing them a simple example of system
thinking, students will better understand this process.
Synthesising Phase / Conclusion
Students get 10mins to write a reflection, journal entry about their
learning from the 2 activities

Assessment Strategies (link to Learning Outcomes):

Formative assessment / feedback will be given during the lesson and
reflection section of this lesson

Notebooks &
pens

Whats next? Where to from this lesson?

In the next lesson, students will design 2D shapes using scratch then
design drawings of their own, following the systems thinking approach
