Unit Description:
During semester 1, French students will learn the language to understand and converse on a
range of topics related to the topic of Caf Culture. Vocabulary will include: food, meal times,
reading a menu and language structures will be used for ordering food at a Caf. Students will
learn present tense verbs to talk about what they like to eat and what they would like to order.
The cultural study will focus on French food etiquette and the differences between the different
cultures eating habits. Emphasis will be placed on learning and practising the language orally to
enhance communication and will also be taught though reading and writing to develop language
and grammar skills. Students will also develop an understanding of other cultures as a way to
communicate cultural and social values.
Outcomes:
-Recognise and use features of the French sound system including pitch, rhythm, stress
and intonation (ACLFRU102). (Correct pronunciation of French words and sounds, such
as ant, ent, et, ).
-Interact with peers and teacher to exchange information and opinions, talk about self and others,
express interests, feelings, likes and dislikes (ACLFRC091). (Ask and tell others which food they like
and dislike).
-Recognise that French language use varies according to context, situation and relationship
(ACLFRU105). (Learn that a polite form of you is used to speak to adults or to show more respect.
Understand that conversations and language is different in cafes and restaurants in France).
-Reinterpret or create own shared texts, experimenting with expressive and performance genres,
and creating moods and effects suitable for different audiences (ACLFRC097). (Study then create
a menu in French to be used in class for cafe ordering role play).
-Explore the relationship between language and culture (ACLFRU108). (Understand that French words are used
in English and English words are used in French and the importance of non verbal communication
and gestures. Consider the difference between French and Australian eating habits and etiquette).
