Written Assessment (Phase 4)

Assessment Prompt:
Using your knowledge from the past week and our discussion
from yesterday, respond to the MU Focus Questions: How did
Greece expand and prosper as a civilization?

Exemplar: (to be completed by teachers)

Performance Task #1
Becoming the Caste System
Introduction: After the Farming Revolution during the Neolithic Ages, people began to
settle down and form civilizations in many regions throughout the world. Alongside
Mesopotamia and Egypt, another important civilization began to take shape in Asia: Ancient
India. Through the role of geography, religion and social structure, the Indian civilization
was able to grow and thrive over the centuries.
Task#1: Goal: Students have a deeper and more nuanced understanding of the caste
system by taking a closer look at a particular level of the caste system individually and then
coming together as a Fishbowl group to discuss their findings
Day 1: Each student is assigned a specific caste from the caste system. They are
provided several different sources (both secondary and primary) that provide them
more information about that particular level. With these sources, they are to
become a person in that caste level and describe what a typical week in their lives
look like, including (but not limited to): the role of religion in their week, their
jobs/responsibilities, what they can/cannot do (i.e. their rights/privileges), who they
can/cannot interact with, style of dress, what they can/cannot eat, and any other
important information. With this information, they write some journal entries that
describe these things (all in first person)
Day 2: Pair 2-3 students together from the same caste to share/norm on their
findings. After this, introduce the expectations for a Fishbowl discussion. Place 4
students in a circle (each representing the 4 castes) and have them discuss the

following: 1) What is your daily life like?, 2) How do you feel on a daily basis proud?
Happy? Ashamed? Bitter? And why?, 3) What is the role of religion in your lives?, and
4) What, if anything, would you like to see change in your caste and the entire caste
system itself?

Mini-Unit 3: Greece
Performance Task 1
Putting Alexander the Great on Trial
Introduction: After the Farming Revolution during the Neolithic Ages, people began to
settle down and form civilizations in many regions throughout the world. Thus far, you have
learned about Mesopotamia, Egypt, India and China. Over the past few weeks, you have

questions to ask the witnesses; the witnesses use their sources to prepare their statements
towards Alex the Great.; the jurors/judge use their sources (which provide an overview of
Alex the Great and a variety of perspectives towards him) to understand his time as a leader
more deeply.
On Day 2, set up the room like a courtroom, establish rules/expectations and then
