MY WEBSITE ACTION PLAN

INITIAL BRAINSTORM:

Name: Dominique Tse

ISSUE = Gender pay and earnings gap in ASIA

Possible elements of my issue I could study (you may add more):

1) Female stereotypes from cultural beliefs
2) Discrimination against women in the work force
3) Poverty
Issue element # 1

Issue element # 2

Issue element # 3

What do I already know?

What do I already know?

What do I already know?

Female stereotypes exist and are

strongly believed by most of
society in Asia. For example,
women are expected to be homemakers. These stereotypes have
been developed since beginning of
history and have been passed
down through generations. This is
effecting job opportunities for
women, who are known to have a
significantly lower income because
they have no choice as the
outcome of these stereotypes. This
is especially common in Asia.

Discrimination within the work

force happens when both male
and female occupants have the
same qualifications, but one
gender is favoured over the other.
This leads to one gender to have
significantly more opportunities
over the other.

Poverty is a continuous cycle that

can influence multiple aspects in
someones life.When someone is in
poverty it is very likely that they are
very poor and live in an inadequate
environment. But they have no
way to improve on their quality of
life. This can have an effect on the
job opportunities available to them.

What do I need to find out?

job opportunities for women in
Asia?
Why do people believe these
stereotypes and allow it to
influence them?

SOURCES of Information: Dont just say Library, Books or Google. For example, Library Database eg
Time Magazine, Biography in Context, Issues: Understanding Controversy & Society etc
Fill this table in BEFORE and DURING your research.
What information do I need to
find?

What SOURCES could I use to

get this information? (be
specific)

How useful was this source?

History of gender roles and

gender inequality in Asia

Online Websites: Women in

History, Wikipedia, Britannica

This source was somewhat useful

because I did use some of the
recommended sources such as
Women in History, but other than
that I couldnt find articles that
specifically addressed the topic
within Asia. I ended up using my
search terms to find other
websites, government data and
data analysis of organisations that
focus on this issue.

News Articles: CNN News, BBC

News, Time Magazine
Infovideo: Youtube

The size and extent of the gender

pay gap in Asia

Online websites: Britannica,

How useful these sources were
Global Issues in Context, CIA The similar to how I responded
World Fact Book
above^. I used one of the
recommended sources which was
News Articles: Time Magazine,
the global issues in context
BBC, CNN
source. I tried looking for articles
on these platforms, but again none
Infographics (Statistical
of them seemed to specify
information eg. charts and data)
information that is specifically for
Asia. I also tried looking for
Infovideos: Youtube, Vimeo
videos, but found that a lot of
them were very opinion based
with no factual information.
However, I did find an amazing
infographic that gave me a lot of
statistical data that was beautifully
displayed with diagrams.

What are the gender roles in Asia? Online websites: Wikipedia

News Articles: Time Magazine,
CNN, Huffington Post
Videos: Youtube

None of these sources really

helped because they would
mention maybe a sentence or two
about it, but the articles and
information werent specifically
about this topic. Gender roles are
all formed with opinions so I did
watch a few videos that gave me
more explanations, but not enough
for me to properly credit it
because they were telling me
things I already knew. I ended up
interviewing and talking to my
mother who has grown up in Asia
around many of these expectations
that she managed to overcome, so
I thought she was a better source.

How are Females discriminated

against in the work force?

News Articles: Huffington Post,

South China Morning Post, The
Guardian

I also went to interview my

mother for this one because I
knew with overcoming these
gender roles she wouldve faced
some kind of discrimination in the
work force. After the interview, I
also tried to look for more
information, but again, by then I
already had what I needed and
none of the information I found
were something new.

Current Activism on narrowing

gender pay gaps in Asia.

News Articles: Asia One, The

Diplomat, BBC News, CNN
News

None of these worked because

even the organisations I found
didnt specifically focus on
narrowing the gender pay gap in
Asia, they all had general topics
and then maybe a page that
mentioned the gender pay gap.

Online Websites: Non-profit

Organisation websites

Case studies and personal stories

Interviews: Personally asking.

Videos: Youtube, Vimeo
Online Website: Britannica,
Wikipedia, Non-profit
Organisation websites
News Articles: BBC News, CNN
News

This source was very useful

because I ended up interviewing
my grandmother and her uncle, so
I knew the story was 100% true
because I have also heard bits and
pieces of these stories growing up.
The other sources werent as
useful because I tried searching,
but no case studies came up. I
dont know whether it was
because my search terms werent
that great, but it didnt matter
anyway because it couldnt
compare to having an actual
interview where you can ask them
questions personally so I could
have all the information I needed.

Methods or tools I will use to COLLECT & RECORD my information are: (give some detail be

clear about HOW you will collect & record)

eg Tools: easybib, diigo, word, evernote, scoopit etc.
eg Methods: Notetaking, summarising, paraphrasing, mindmapping, brainstorming, cutting & pasting relevant
notes etc

Fill in BEFORE you start your research

Fill in AFTER you finish

researching

What TOOLS or METHODS will I

use to collect & record
information? (incl detail)

Why will I use them/do this?

(justify why you chose this/these
methods)

What did I actually do?

I will use Ref me to reference all

my sources.

I chose to use ref me because it

will help me keep track of the
sources used. This will make is
easier to put together the
bibliography at the end because all
the sources and details about those
sources are already recorded. Ref
me will help me make sure I
correctly cite the sources in APA
format.

I did use Ref me only, though I did

struggle at times because this is my
first time using it.

I will use pages to gather my

research and information found.

I chose to use pages because I do

I used pages to collect my data
not have word on my computer and only, it was what seemed most
I am more familiar with pages.
convenient for me.
Therefore I will be able to use it
more efficiently without issue.

I will cut and paste relevant

research on to pages.

I find cutting and pasting more less

time consuming because I do not
need to do extra summarising. Its
a sorter process with the same
outcome, which is the ideas and
facts which will appear on the
website.

This is exactly what I did. When I

found a piece of information I
thought was relevant, I would copy
and paste that piece of information
on to a pages document with bullet
points and then paste the link or
source under it so I know exactly
what to reference if I ended up
using it.

I will use mind mapping to link my

ideas.

It is more effective for me to

visually see how things link and
relate to each other. This prevents
me from mixing up ideas and
adding them to the wrong page.

I actually used this twice. I first did

this to brainstorm what pages I
would be using and how I will
develop them . Then I used this
again to write down what the
causes were because there was so
many factors it became too
confusing for me to understand
with only words and no visual aid.

Pages needed to complete my website: What information and links will I need

Fill this table in BEFORE and DURING your website creation.

What information do I need to

convey?

What Pages could I use to get

this information across to the
audience? (be specific)

Introduction to the gender pay gap Home page, Introduction Page,

and history of gender inequality in History Page
Asia

How can I link the pages

together?

I could have links on the home

page that directs the reader to the
history and introduction pages or I
could have this information
directly written on the home page.

Detailed explanation of why the

issue of gender pay gaps exists in
Asia

A main causes page, pages for

each aspect of the issue

I could have a main causes page

that links to the other aspects or I
could split the main causes page
in to sections.

A page about the activist group I

am creating

Home page, about us page

The general information about the

activist group running the website
can be included in home page or
in a separate page which links to
the home page.

Recent news and updates about

the gender pay gap in Asia

Recent News page, updates page,

current state of affairs page, home
page

This can be included in a news

feed in the home page so people
immediately see it and recall some
information about it. It can also be
included in a separate page named
under one of those titles.

Activism opportunities available

to the public and activism acts
currently taking place.

Organisations page, get

involved page, current activities
page

All these pages can be linked

together by an activism page
which then directs the reader to
different aspects of activism.

Why this issues needs to be

stopped to encourage activism
among readers.

Activism page, how you can help/

get involved/make a difference
page.

This can be linked from the home

page so that people who already
have some knowledge on the issue
and used the website for the sole
purpose of activism can get
directly to it.

March 3rd

The whole process got

slowed down because this
is about the time where
my anxiety started acting
up more often. Therefore,
I got more stressed about
this task then I shouldve
and spent a lot of time
thinking about possible
elements then deleting
them because I thought it
wasnt good enough.
Eventually the due date
came and I realised I spent
too much time freaking
out and not really doing
anything except delete
things over and over
again. So, I rushed it on
the last day and stayed up
too late working on it
resulting in me getting a
terrible headache and not
going to school the next
day, thus not handing it in,
though it was still not
finished.

research plan: Method and Tools and
Pages needed to complete my website

research plan so it is clear what the steps
are next.

February

March 26th

At this point I finally got

responsible and told Ms.
Du Puy about my issue
with completing it and
calmed down enough to
properly finish this part so
I knew what I had to do
next.

Research information as needed according February

to the What information do I need to
24th
find? column in the sources of
information table following the
recommended sources in the next column
by copy and pasting relevant information
on to a pages document.

April 10th

This took a lot longer than

expected because I kept
deleting sources because I
thought the information I
found werent good
enough.

Type up all content going on the website

on a separate pages document using the
copy and pasted information researched.

February
28th

April 18th

Knowing I had to hand the

website the following
week, I tried typing up as
much as possible.

Edit the content to check for inaccurate

information, grammar, etc.

February
29th

May 15th

I quickly checked for

errors as it needed to be
handed in the next day.

Create a new weebly website and add

pages as needed. Copy and paste the
created content on to the correctly page as
intended. Gather images and other visual
aids and add them to the pages where
appropriate.

March 2nd

May 15th

I completed this quickly

for the reason stated
above.

Create an APA bibliography using Ref Me, March 3rd

making sure the sources are correctly cited
and add it to the corresponding page on
the website.

June 3rd

The same as above.

Complete the rest of the research plan

March 3rd
such as the Evaluation which needs to be
completed when finished with the website.

June 3rd

The same as above.

EVALUATION:
Things that went well

Things that
need
improvement

Ways of improving

I think I followed the

plan quite closely and
completed all the steps
that I originally planned
out, there were none
that were missed or not
followed properly. I also
created the action plan
using methods that I
know I am familiar with
and work well with, so
that helped contribute
to how well I followed
the action plan.

There were
actually a few
extra steps that I
had to do
outside of the
action plan
because the
action plan didnt
include it such
as thinking of the
causes, finding
videos, the laws,
statistics and so
on.

I shouldve thought through the action

plan more careful when creating it
and planned what I would include on
the website first or made that the first
step, so that I would know exactly
what I needed before creating the
action plan. Maybe I couldve added
better search terms as well because
the ones I had didnt work as well as I
wanted it to and the sources I had
listed out for myself to follow to look
for information were all terribly
perhaps maybe because they arent
specifically created for asian news, I
couldve included some Asian news
sites as sources I could use to find
better results.

The copy and pasting

Collecting and method worked perfect
for me because I find
Recording
that the best for
because I can find all
my information in one
place and look for
specific key words
using the show find
and replace option on
pages which is where I
store my information. I
think creating a mind
map was also very
successful for me
because being able to
physically draw it out
and see it all linked
together and split in to
smaller topics were a
lot more helpful than a
bunch of words
because I am a visual
learner.

I dont think I
really need much
improvement on
the way I was
collecting and
recording data,
but I will say that
the content that I
did collect could
of been more
specific and
backed up with
more facts and
statistics.

I could improve this by using the

RCHK library online resources
because the resources provided for
us have been looked through by other
people and approved so that they are
good websites with factual data that
has been recommended for us. There
are also subscriptions and data there
that can not be found simply
searching search terms online
because you need money to but them
and our school has already done that
for us, so I should taken an
advantage of this large variety of
resources provided.

Creating &
following
action plan

Creating
website

I have used weekly

before so I know how
things work and where
to look for things. This
has allowed me to
create the functions
that I want have my
website organised
early so that it can be
easily navigated
through and
understood.

More photos
definitely, but I
was at a point
where photos
were no longer
priority. Maybe I
couldve had
more factual
data and
statistics used to
back up my
points as well.

Find more photos that support the

issue and the topic of a specific page
to use for the website. I also couldve
included more of the information I had
researched because I felt that there
were a lot that I didnt use that were
very good pieces of data. I couldve
also used more creative formatting
and played around with different font
sizes, colours, italics, etc. to
emphasise or make the website look
more interesting.
