The Association of American Educators code of ethics and the National Education
Association code of ethics are very important in the practice of being an educator. They are very
similar in the fact that they are both a list of codes that are required of you to be an educator.
They each discuss the commitments that need to be made to the students, parents, colleagues,
and the profession itself. Each of these codes enforce how important a nurturing environment is
to the students. The codes require educators to treat students fairly no matter what race, color,
creed, sex, national origin, marital status, political or religious beliefs, family, social or cultural
background, or sexual orientation they may be. The codes are lists of everything that educators
can or cannot do. The AAE code of ethics for educators talks more about the importance of
efforts made between the parents and educators for the well-being of the student.
These two sets of codes are important so that educators know what is expected of them.
Given these codes, educators are not able to make excuses for unacceptable behavior. They are
set out in a very clear, understandable formats and are as straightforward as possible. With these
codes those that have interest in becoming an educator also know what is expected of them
before they even get into the profession. The codes give the educators a standard to hold
themselves up to. These standards are required for them to even be hired by any educational
institution. If it is believed that a future educator is not able to meet these standards, they will not
be able to get a job.
The codes, in general, are made to protect everyone involved. They protect the students,
educators, parents, and those in the administrative parts of the school. Without codes like these

unfair treatment would most likely be more common all over the country. These codes are what
help to make the schools safe for everyone.
As a teacher, I will focus on keeping the children safe from harm to learning or to their
health and safety. I will be sure to keep all students, no matter what race, color, sex, social or
cultural background, in an environment that they are able to be comfortable in and able to learn.
Lastly, I will continue with my own professional growth and encourage the children to continue
to learn as well.
