GrowingupinMaycomb,Alabamainthe1930swasmostlikelynoteasy.Thisiswhere
thenovel,ToKillAMockingbirdbyHarperLeetakesplace.Thisbookfollowsthelifeofa
younggirlnamedScoutandherolderbrotherJemandtheendeavorsthattheyembarkupon
throughtheiryounglifeandthelessonofcouragethattheirfatheraimstoteachthem.
Scoutisayoung,spunkygirlwhoisn'tafraidtogetherhandsdirty.Asayoungchildshe
followedherolderbrotheraroundconstantly.Shewantednothingmorethantojustbeoneof
theguysasyoumaysay.OneofScout'sbiggestproblemswasstayingoutoftroubleduetoher
moreboylikecharacteristics.Havingonlyafatherandabrothertolookuptoinherimmediate
familyreallyaffectthepersonthatScoutgrewintobe.ScoutwasfatheredbythebrilliantMr.
AtticusFinchwhotaughtherandherbrotherJemmostofwhattheyknow.Atticuswas
extremelywiseandtriedhisbesttoleadhischildrenintherightdirection.Jem,Scoutsolder
brother,wasathleticandsmartaswell.HewasoneofthebiggestinfluencesinScoutslifeand
taughtherrightfromwrongastheyweregrowingup.
Livinginthesouthastheydid,leftnoroomforScout,Jem,andAtticustoshyawayfrom
achallenge.Theyallneededtolearntofaceadversityintheirownways.Amajorpartofthis
novelwasthetrialthatAtticuswasdefendingamanofAfricanAmericandescentin.Thismans
namewasTomRobinsonandhehadbeenaccusedoftherapeofMayellaEwell,thedaughterof

BobEwell.TheEwellswerenotwidelyrespectedinMaycombbutmoresothananyblackman
inthesouth.WhenthetrialwasbroughttoAtticussattention,hewillingagreedtorepresentto
defendant.Mostpeoplewouldhaveturneddownthetrialbecausetheirwaslittletonochanceof
winningbutAtticusdidnot.FromAtticusspointofview,courageis...whenyouknowyoure
lickedbeforeyoubeginbutyoubeginanywayandyouseeitthroughnomatterwhat.(Lee112)
Whenmostpeoplethinkofcourage,theyimagineasuperheroor...amanwithaguninhis
hand.(112)butAtticusdidnotsharethesameviews.
BecauseAtticusviewscourageinthisway,hemakesapointofteachingthattohis
children.Forexample,asapunishmentforJemsactingout,AtticusmadeJemreadtoMrs.
Duboseattheveryendofherlife.AtthetimeJemthinksthatthispunishmentisjusttomake
himmiserablebutinreality,itwasanextremelyvaluablelifelesson.Mrs.Dubosewasa
strugglingmorphineaddictwhowastryingtobreakheraddiction.Youwouldntthinkthisis
somethingtoconsidercourageousbuttheMrs.Dubosefacedalotofadversity.Shewassoold
andclosetotheendofherlifethatmostpeoplewouldhavejustgivenupandcontinuedtheir
addictionbutnotMrs.Dubose.Shefoughtthroughherproblemliterallytothedeath.
ThisideaisseeninScoutandJemaswellasDillthroughoutthenovel.Onehuge
examplethatcomestomindiswhenJemandJemfollowedAtticustothecountyjailonthenight
theCunninghamswerepotentiallygoingtokillTom.Atfirst,IthoughtScoutwasjust
extremelycluelessandJemwasilladvisedwhentheydoveheadfirstintothebeginningsofa
difficultfight.But,asitturnsout,theymighthavesavedAtticusandTomslife.Whenthey
weretoldtoleavetheyrefused.StandinguptotheCunninghamseventhoughtheywerevastly
outnumbersandifafighthadbrokenouttheyhadthepotentialofbeingkilled.

Atticussviewsinthebookwereextremelyeyeopeningtome.Ineverthoughtof
courageinthewaythehedid.Ithinkitisverytruethatcouragecanbemorethanjustaman
withagun.Herein2015Icanseethisreallyshowingthroughinsociety.Peoplearefinally
standingupforthemselvesandwhattheybelievein,notwithviolenceandgunsbutwith
communication.Oneexample,isthelegalizationofgaymarriage.Thewholemovementbegan
withasmallgroupwhowerepersistentintheirbeliefsandworkedextremelyhardtoachieve
theirgoaleventhoughatonetimetheyhadoverhalfthenationagainstthem.Somethoughtthey
hadnochanceatreachingtheirgoalbuttheycontinuedtomoveforwardandfinallygotwhat
theywanted.
ToKillAMockingbirdtalkedaboutthelessonthatScoutandJemweretaughtabout
couragebytheirfather.Thislessonwasextendedpassedjustthebookandtaughtmepersonally
thatyoudontneedtobeaherotobeconsideredcourageous.
