For Immediate Release
RECONSTRUCTION OF ROADBEDS SET TO BEGIN MON., OCTOBER 7
EUGENE, OR., Oct. 6, 2014 - Starting Mon., Oct. 7, the roadbeds of sixth and
seventh avenues between High and Garfield will under go construction. The current roadbeds are
badly deteriorated and need reconstruction due to numerous resurfacing efforts, according to city
officials. Along with renovation of the roadbeds, a sixth travel lane will be added to handle
existing and projected increases in traffic load.
During construction, at least two lanes of traffic will remain open on both sixth and
seventh avenues, and businesses and residents will have access to adjacent properties at all times.
As approved by voters in May 2014, construction of the High to Washington Street section will
be accomplished in 2014. Construction of the Washington to Garfield sections of both avenues
will occur in 2015.
The roadbeds will be removed and replaced by a new foundation and asphalt surface.
Also, new curbs and gutters will facilitate drainage improvements. New sidewalks, traffic
signals, streetlights and signs will be installed along with expanding the roadways to six lanes.
During the road expansion, 26 historic trees will be removed while another 26 will be preserved.
Once the reconstruction is finished, 600 new trees will be planted along each side of sixth and
seventh avenues.
Improvements are identified in the citys long-range transportation plan. The cost of
improvements are projected around $10.2 million, and funded by federal and state highway
