Design Lab - Temperature Effect on Magnetic Field

Research Question: How does the temperature of magnet affect its strength?
Hypothesis: As the temperature of the magnet increases, its magnetic strength would
reduce.
Variables:
Independent variable: The temperature of the magnet.
Dependent Variable: The magnetic strength of the magnet. (The force required to pull the
magnet from the surface)
Materials Required:
1. 4 different similar magnets,
2. A freezer(-15 C), A bucket of ice water (temp: 0 C) and a pot of boiling water
(temp: 100 C)
3. A spring balance
4. A thick steel cuboidal block
5. String
Procedure:
1.

Take the magnet which has not been dipped in any water and connect it with the
spring balance using a piece of string.

2.

Place the magnet close to the steel block so that it attracts it.

3.

Make sure that the readings on the balance is 0

4.

Pull the spring balance until the magnet no longer attracts the block, i.e. the reading
on the spring balance goes back to 0

5.

Record the readings

6. Repeat step 1-5 with magnets which has been place in a temperature of -15C, 0C
and 100C respectively

Results:
Temperature of the magnet
-15 C
0 C
24 C (room temperature)
100 C

Conclusion:
If the graph has a negative gradient it can be concluded that the hypothesis made is
correct and the magnetic strength is inversely proportional to the temperature of the
magnet.
