3500 years ago the people of Egypt


had very different beliefs to other
religions.
They believed in the afterlife.
They also believed in many different

Ancient Egyptians believed that


humans were made up of two parts.
Physical and Spiritual.
They believed that when you die all
the spiritual parts of the body are
released.

However, the Ancient Egyptians


believed that the spirit needed a
physical 'home' to come back to. This
could be a special statue or the
persons body.

The final part of passing into the afterlife


was to have your heart weighed against 'the
feather of truth' by Anubis.
If the scales balanced then the God Osiris
would greet you into the afterlife. However,
if the scales didn't balance then Thoth would
judge you and you would be eaten by a
monster that was part lion, crocodile and
hippopotamus.

In Ancient Egyptian times the people


believed that all aspects of the world
had their own God.
Therefore they worshipped many
different Gods.
Today we will look at just a few....
.....some of them you might have come
across already!

Anubis
God of the Dead
Anubis watched over the process of
mummification and priests often
wore a
mask of his face when mummifying
Anubis had the body of a man and
bodies.
the head of Jackal. Jackals were
often found in Ancient Egyptian
graveyards.
Remember 'the feather of truth'?
Anubis is the God that weighs your
heart against

the feather of truth.

Thoth
God of Writing
The Ancient Egyptians believed
that Thoth gave them the gift of
heiroglyphics (Ancient Egyptian
writing).
Thoth had the body of a man and
the head of an Ibis which is an
African bird.
He is usually depicted holding a
writing
palette.
Thoth was also part
of 'the
feather of truth'.
He would decide your fate
after the weighing

of your

Osiris
King of the
Underworld
Osiris is shown as a green skinned
mummified Pharaoh He has a
crown of ostrich feathers.
Osiris greets your soul and looks
after your spirit when you enter the
afterlife.
He is the God you hope to meet after the
weighing of your heart against the feather of
truth!
Osiris is also the father of the next God we will
look at........

Horus
God of the Sky
Horus is represented by a man with
the head of a hawk. As he was the
God of the sky it was appropriate
for him to be part bird.
He was the protector of the rulers
of Egypt and people believed that
the Pharaohs were the living Horus.
Horus had a wife who we will meet next.........

Hathor
Goddess of Love &
Joy
Hathor was known as the Mother of
the Pharaohs and like her husband,
Horus, she was also a protector
She was depicted as part cow.
God.
Sometimes shown with the head of
a cow or sometimes with a cow
A large temple was
