COMMENT

One song can spark a moment

One flower can wake a dream
One tree can start a forest
One bird can herald spring
One smile begins friendship
One hand clap lifts a soul
One star can guide a ship at sea
One vote can change a nation
One sunbeam lights a room
One candle wipes all the darkness
One laugh will conquer gloom
One step must start each journey
One word must start each prayer
One hope will raise our spirits
One touch can show you care
One voice can speak with wisdom
One heart can know whats true

One life can make a difference

1st XI Cricket
A heavy reliance was placed firmly on the shoulders of Russell to get the bulk of the runs and to be
regularly amongst the wickets. He didnt disappoint, racking up a total of 351 runs at a mightily impressive
average of a touch over 50, coupled with finishing as leading wicket taker. Instrumental with 57* in the only
success of the season, an 8 wicket victory over Bishopsgate, Russell proved he will certainly be a player
to watch in his final year. The other highlight of the season was a battling draw against quite possibly the
best side we played. Hall Grove set an improbable target of 183 from 34 overs but a surge of resilience
raced its way to the forefront of the match.Teetering at 81-5 with plenty of overs remaining, the usual
late order collapse seemed to be on its way and an early conclusion to the match would be had.
However, Hawkey and Boer put together a remarkable rearguard action against some hostile bowling to
inch their way closer and closer to a most unlikely draw. It was left to number 11, Zakhir ma. to see out
the final over and complete what was an astonishing escape from defeat. Hopes that this result would lead
to a further upturn in fortunes quickly evaporated when outplayed in successive matches against Ludgrove,
Woodcote House and Milbourne Lodge where Russells well complied knock of 72 was in vain. A final day
defeat against Horris Hill completed what will go down as a forgettable season. At times, the boys showed
that they could be capable of competing. However, on too many occasions, when some real quality was
needed to pick up a key wicket, snaffle a half chance, or dig in and put together a score, we often fell a
little short.

Camping
This summer has provided some fantastic conditions for school camping, apart from the rather stormy
first weekend for forms I to III! The boys who have attended have really enjoyed sleeping out in the
schools commodious bell tents, near to the Orchard. The boys have constructed basic survival shelters
out of natural materials, built fires, played capture the flag, toasted marshmallows and told ghost stories
around the fire. The most popular event however has been the air rifle 'tin can' shoot to win their
precious marshmallows! It has been great fun and hopefully will continue to be a popular feature of the
summer term.

French Day

Gardening Club

Our annual French day took place on Monday 18th

May.The boys, all dressed in blue, white and red, had
a French breakfast of pains au chocolat, croissants
and hot chocolate. In their lessons, they did a
French quiz, played Scrabble in French, learnt about
the French Revolution and did some maths the
French way. During Break, the boys played a lively
game of "ballon prisonnier" and all enjoyed it. At
the end of a delicious French lunch of coq au vin
and gratin dauphinois, they were awarded several
prizes. A very fun day!

The boys have been busy at the Gardening Club

this term, watering the plants and weeding
during break or their free time. They have grown
radishes, lettuces, tomatoes, courgettes,
strawberries, potatoes and broad beans.

Sunningdale Pigs and Bees

Sunningdale School has Pigs! At the beginning of May we welcomed three small Gloucestershire Old Spot
piglets to the school. This is a very exciting venture and everyone couldn't wait for them to arrive. They
have been with us for just over two months now and they require feeding twice a day and making sure
they have fresh water to drink and clean bedding to sleep in.The boys have really enjoyed feeding them
and caring for them. They will be with us for the Summer Term. We then plan to make lots of sausages.
The boys are aware of this and I believe this is the most important reason for having the pigs.
We are too quick in today's society to think all food just comes straight from a supermarket. The pupils
first hand can feed and care for an animal they know they will eat in the future. We are also 100% sure
that the meat we will eat lived a happy existence and was able to live life the the full by being able to
express all their natural behaviours such as digging and bathing in the sun. This is unlike the vast majority
of commercially raised pigs for our supermarkets which never even the see the light of day. I want the
pupils to get closer to the natural world and the systems that sustain us.

House Singing
Competition
The House Singing Competition on June 25th
was a lovely evening with the standard of entries
higher than ever before. We were pleased to
welcome Mr Richard Coppack, the Head of
Music from Ashdown House School who gave
some very valuable comments to each of the
soloists, and judged the competition for us. He
said it was a very close call with the standard
being so high, but the overall winners of each
class were Coen for the Junior Solo class, and
Hopton mi for the Senior solo class. The House
Song class was a close run affair. This year's
theme was 'Songs from the Shows' and the
houses had been practising hard in the weeks
prior, but on the night the prize went to Girdlestone for their version of 'Circle of Life'. Well
done to them, but also to the other three houses
who all gave very creditable performances.

Parents Choir
As well as pigs we also have our very first Beehive
filled with 60,000 bees working hard at producing
delicious golden honey which will be extracted
later on in the term. The boys have had the
opportunity to put a bee suit on and get up close
and personal with the beehive, looking inside and
doing inspections.

Brookwood Commonwealth War Graves Commission Cemetery

On Saturday the 27th June, forms IV and IVA visited the Brookwood Commonwealth War Graves
Commission Cemetery. It was a fitting culmination to the term, during which they have studied the First
and Second World Wars. The cemetery is the largest one of its kind in the UK and is immaculately maintained. The boys visited British, Canadian, US, Polish, Czechoslovakian and other plots and memorials. Particularly poignant were the graves of soldiers who had died in the recent Afghanistan campaign.

The Parents Choir met this term on May 17th

with an afternoon rehearsal before joining the
boys for the evening service. We were able to
distribute music before the day, so everyone was
well prepared, and the evening service was a real
feast of music. We sang the Pentecost anthem
'Come Holy Ghost' by Attwood with T. Arthur
singing the solo verse. The sound is becoming
more balanced and confident every time the
group meets. It is a valuable experience for the
boys to be able to sing music supported with
tenor and bass parts, and the good humour and
enjoyment the parents bring with them makes
the occasions an event to look forward to.

House Competition
What a great term for the house competition!
One point separated Girdlestone and the
winners Crabtree in one of the most exciting
competitions for a long time.We celebrated with
a delicious meal of duck pancakes, butterfly lamb
and melting chocolate pudding. House elder
Malhame gave a soulful last speech urging the
house on to more victories in the terms to
come. Thanks to Darren and his team for such a
wonderful meal and to the boys in the House
for their outstanding efforts throughout the
term and for making sure to show their show
ups, it always makes such a difference.

2nd XI Cricket
I can't remember the last time a cricket season was
so much fun. This team really bonded and gelled
and worked together as a genuine team should. We
won only the one game against Milbourne Lodge
and managed a draw versus St George's early in the
season, otherwise we lost our matches. The difficulty

Under 11A Cricket

PLAYED 11 WON 11 - UNBEATEN SEASON

Talent alone does not make a great team. Without talent it becomes more difficult but what makes a
great team is hard work, enthusiasm, enjoyment and togetherness. This group of boys displayed all of
these qualities and then some.We got off to a great start and although it was a little closer at times, they
just got better and better.
We started with a comfortable win against Lockers Park with Buxton leading from the front with the bat
and an entertaining cameo from Coen. Ashdown were next and although we did not field that well, Buxton
took key wickets and Senior ma and Hopkins got us off to a great start with the bat. Bishopsgate and
Woodcote were held to fairly modest totals by two five wicket hauls by Senior ma. who then started
smashing the ball to all corners of the ground with 4 sixes in his innings. It was Buxton's turn to take five
against Hall Grove and Hopton mi. , Lewis ma. and Senior mi. got their chance to show what they could
do with the bat. This was fast becoming an all round team.
Ludgrove was next. A run out by Senior mi., the most deadly fielder in the side, removed their best batsman
before he had faced a ball and we then never looked like losing. This was also the game that Hinchcliffe
really found his rhythm with the ball. Milbourne Lodge simply did not make enough runs and Lewis ma.
batted well to help secure a comfortable victory.

at this standard is never the bowling, most can turn

their arm,it's finding depth to the batting and genuine
lasting partnerships that can sustain defendable
scores over the one hundred mark. Sadly we only
managed one score above a hundred which gives a
good indication as to our batting weakness. Nevertheless there were some wonderful cameos from
Iglesias (40 v Hall Grove), Hagg-Davies and
Cartwright. Behind the stumps Cartwright proved
an excellent, fearless keeper and at mid-off with
Iglesias diving for every catch the two made a
formidable pair. There were some great spells of
bowling from Marshall-Lee, Davenport-Thomas,
Arthur and, most impressively, Delikatntyi.
Crewe-Read captained well with Delikatnyi to take
over the helm when it was needed and a mention
must be made for Boam who made the number
one spot his own and those other two stalwarts of
the team Treacher and Seal.

Against Woodcote, away, the top three all scored 50 in a total of 216 of 20 overs! We used ten bowlers
back at them and it was good to see Davies and de Carlos in the wickets. Senior mi. made three run outs!
With three games to go Brambletye gave us what looked like a sterner test with a total of 150.With runs
from Senior ma., Hopkins ,Buxton, Hopton mi. and Hinchliffe, though we got through in only 15 overs with
the loss of 3 wickets. Our closest game came against St.Andrew's, Pangbourne. We did not bat well and
without Senior's 53 and a very good performance from Lewis ma. we would have struggled. It was close
all the way in their reply but an outstanding team performance in the field kept our record intact.
The final game of the season was a celebration of all we had achieved. We batted first and declared at
195-7 with 64 for Buxton, 63 from Senior ma. and 33 from Hopkins. They were never going to get close
to this and another fivefer from Buxton wrapped up was what an amazing term.
This season will live long in the memory;not just for the fact that they won but also for how they played the game.

3rd XI Cricket
The 3rd XI cricket team have made excellent progress this summer term. The boys benefited hugely
from the brilliant training sessions set up by the visiting Hampshire County coach, Paul, early in the
season. The boys repeatedly rehearsed bowling, batting and fielding drills and these early sessions were
key in laying the foundations for future success. Of the first four games the team achieved an impressive
three wins. The improvement of the team led to our better players deservedly moving up to the second
XI and subsequently our last two games did not go our way. The penultimate game at Ludgrove was a
demonstration of resilience and endeavor and in a nail biting final over, the team narrowly fell short of a
draw by two balls. Aside from the positive improvements made I have been particularly impressed by the
team spirit displayed that has made this season so enjoyable.

The boys have made such huge improvements

this term and should be proud of how far they
have come. They won all three of their home
matches, against Ashdown House, Woodcote
House & St Andrew's Pangbourne but the boys
weren't so lucky away from home, only winning
one. They came incredibly close to beating both
Hall Grove and Brambletye, just losing by 1
wicket and 2 runs respectively in the matches.
Special mentions must go to the leading run
scorers Mueller Ansar (87) and Crewe-Read mi.
(86) and the leading wicket taker Field ma. although all the boys played very important roles.

The Under 9 A's this year has been a real roller

coaster of emotions. I, for one, am certainly one year
closer to an acute myocardial infarction. We started
off the season with stunning victories over Lockers
Park,Dorset House, Ashdown House and Bishopsgate.
With the Woodcote House fixture just around the
corner, we knew a victory there would put us on
course for an unbeaten season. Though we
performed with valor, it wasn't quite enough and we
ended up losing by 12 runs. Ludgrove, Millbourne
Lodge and St Andrews were all too strong in a very
frustrating middle period. The season finished with fine victories over Horris Hill and Brambletye. The team
was captained fantastically by Boscawen. His batting and keeping were not too dissimilar to a young Jos Buttler. I couldn't have been prouder of this group of boys.

Under 11C Cricket

Despite best efforts and unfailing enthusiasm the
C's season ended in harsh neatness of fact:
played four; lost four.Although we learned a lot
about ourselves on the way, the winning feeling
was not one of them. However, our team did
boast a selection of multiple wicket takers who
often caused the opposition an uncomfortable
passage of play: namely Avakayan, Le Nagard,
Caddy, Hagger and Khan. Avakayan, especially,
was dangerous with the ball and against Horris
Hill found himself on a hat trick after some
unerringly accurate pace bowling. Le Nagard was
an industrious newbie to the game who showed
great spirit and fight even in a lost cause. Caddy
and Khan shared the keeper's gloves and proved
admirable in the role. Hagger has a future in the
sport once he turns his eye to ball coordination
into confident punches of willow on leather.
Others such as Kuanyshev ma, Van Heusden,
Burn, Preston mi, Wallace and Horton ma all
played their parts and contributed to a very
enjoyable season. Good effort all round.
A.D.V

The boys started the term with excitement and anticipation. The lack of fixtures and subsequent
cancellations left us with only 3 fixtures for the term which is never enough to have a fair crack of the
whip.We never got going but with a few more games I feel a win was just round the corner. We came
very close in an exciting game at Ludgrove. They scored 71 and we fell just short with 62. It was a game
the boys took a lot of confidence from after a heavy
defeat to Bishopsgate a few weeks earlier. Many
weeks past before we played our final game, our first
at home, against Horris Hill. We were hit hard by
chicken pox but we managed to get a team out
however we didn't really do ourselves justice and
lost heavily. Our concentration was not on the
game and all the boys would agree we should have
done a lot better. Stand out performances this
season would include 25 scored by Dawson and
Bhardwaj at Ludgrove and Guest-Gornalls bowling
which was accurate and hard to pick up by the
opposition all term. The team has enjoyed training
and practising and I hope they go into next year with
the same attitude and enjoyment for the sport.

20/20 Trip to Surrey v

Kent at the Oval Cricket
Ground

The first of two trips to watch live professional

cricket meant a road trip to the Rose Bowl,
Southampton to see Hampshire play Essex. The
20/20 match was great fun with lots of 4s and 6s
being hit! It was terrific for the boys to study how
the professionals hit the ball so far as well as see
the energy that this popular form of cricket has
brought into the game. Hopefully it served to inspire the boys as they stepped back out onto our
own cricket fields!

The 20/20 cricket trip to watch Surrey play against

Kent at the Oval was brilliant fun. This was my first
ever cricket trip and I hope to go to many more.
I loved watching the crme de la crme cricketers
playing and see how to really hit a six! The
atmosphere and the buzz of a packed ground was
awesome! I and the other boys learnt so much and
we were all really inspired by the action and
experiences gained. Firsts like this are ones which
you will always remember. My favourite moment of
the trip was watching a professional batsman play
the famous Dilshan scoop! Thank you to Mr Guest
and Mr Tidd for taking us.

Fathers Match - 1st XI

Select versus Fathers XI
(with some staff!)

This was tremendous fun.The Fathers XI, expertly

captained by Mr Hopton had first use of the ball
and set about serving up a concoction of rather
generous bowling combined with the odd wicket
taking delivery! Some late lusty blows from Malhame
and Kim saw the boys reach a competitive total of
91. In reply, the Fathers lost wickets at regular
intervals before scrambling their way to within two
of victory, thus giving the boys their second
successive victory in the annual contest. The game
was played in marvellous spirit. The boys and I
appreciate the efforts of the Fathers who were able
to attend and take to the field! We look
forward to another competitive outing next year!

Sports Day
We were blessed with glorious weather for what
was a fantastic and very exciting Sports Day.
Records tumbled and both victor ludorums were
hotly contested, only being won in the last race of
the day in the case of the Middle School. The
grounds and track looked absolutely magnificent
and huge thanks must go to T.M.E.D and A.J.N.D.

Mothers and Sons Tennis

Despite an unwelcome spattering of rain which
made the courts a bit slippery and the balls a little
woolly, the mothers and sons tennis competition
was a great success and a lot of fun. Full marks must
be given to MrsArthur,Mrs Lamb,Mrs Cemlyn-Jones,
Mrs Senior, Mrs Dyachenko and Mrs Hawkey, for
braving the elements and playing some highly
competitive matches with such good humour and
skill. Mrs Cemlyn-Jones and Hawkey were crowned
as rightful champions, seeing as they were undefeated; and the runners up, perhaps surprisingly
given the hard-fought nature of the Dyachenko's
play, was Miss De-Mestre and Hopton mi. Many
thanks to all involved, it is very much hoped that
we might see you again next year!

Two district champions, three national finalists, five district placings. Overall victories in four out of five matches.
Seniors
Vs. Hall Grove lost,Vs. Bishopsgate lost,Vs.Woodcote lost,Vs. St.Andrews Pangbourne lost Vs.
Papplewick drawn.
This was always going to be a tough season for the seniors as we were not blessed with a particularly
strong group. However, to their credit they improved significantly over the season and there were
some notable performances from the team captain Beckwith-Moore, who remained unbeaten all
season in the hurdles and went to the nationals. Hawkey also ran beautifully in the 800m and Efemuai
recorded some good times in 100m races.
Juniors
Vs. Hall Grove won,Vs. Bishopsgate won,Vs.Woodcote lost,Vs. St.Andrews Pangbourne won Vs.
Papplewick won.
But for a very poor day at the office against Woodcote this would have been a sublime season. As it
was, the Under 11s were hugely successful and led in their efforts by Hinchliffe who was imperious all
season, winning the district athletics in the hurdles (12.50s) and also qualifying for the nationals in the
1500m. Something we think was last achieved 18 years ago. Lewis ma jumped beautifully and was a handy
sprinter in partnership with Hopton mi and Jackson ma won the district championship in an astonishing
run, setting a new school record (2.38.03s) only for it to be beaten in the last competition of the season.
Under 10
Vs. Hall Grove won,Vs. Bishopsgate won,Vs.Woodcote lost, ,Vs. St.Andrews Pangbourne won,Vs.

A superb season from the Under 10s was led from the front by Lewis mi and Boscawen, the former

strings fizzing with strength and skill. And for the
most part, they have! Up until our final fixture
against Ludgrove, our Senior and Junior pairs
have been almost invincible. The Seniors won all
their engagements and the Juniors won them all
but one: a fiercely contested match against Hall
Grove where they eventually went down 4-5.
The teams have been fairly consistent with
Beckwith Moore and Hopton ma as the first
senior pair, followed by Hawkey and Russell, and
either Maldonado ma and Dyachenko or
Gavrilov and Preston ma.The juniors have been
lead by Hopton mi and Senior ma, with De
Carlos and Maldonado mi as the second pair,
and Le Nagard and Lewis ma or Buxton and
Senior mi as the third pairing. For the most part
our serving and base-line play was solid: we
tended to aim to wear the opposition down
from the back, as generally we were less assured
at the net. With all systems firing, perhaps we
grew complacent, maybe we were guilty of
resting on our laurels, or perhaps it was the fact
that Mr Smith-Bingham knew our game inside
out from previous years, but against Ludgrove
we were convincingly out-maneuvered and out
played. This hard loss aside, the team should be
pretty proud of itself for beating some teams
from much larger schools.Well played all!

The life of the Music department has continued on with its usual energy this term, and we have achieved
a great deal in terms of performance and exam results in addition to the day to day work that goes on
in the classroom. We had an Informal Concert on May 28th which was well attended and the standard of
performance by all the soloists was of a high level. We are pleased that the concerts are now streamed
live online so any parents who are not able to make the concert can watch from home. Following Long
Leave the focus was on the Summer Concert on June 27th which was a fantastic evening of music
following on from the Art Exhibition in the Sports Hall. All the ensembles that meet weekly had a chance
to play their pieces:The woodwind group, String Group, Brass Duo, and the Band, and it was the first time
our Training Choir sang in public, with the Chapel Choir concluding the concert. There were some
excellent solos and centre stage were our Leavers Hopton ma and Malhame who played and sang with
confidence and skill way beyond what we would normally expect of boys of their age. Both these boys
have achieved an exceptional amount this year and we wish them well in their next schools and hope they
continue to progress as they have been with us.

Old Boys
Congratulations to Richard Gaskell on his
engagement, Alexander Leschallas, Rory
Scott, Oliver Gamble and Charles ScottHopkins on the birth of daughters, to Andrew
Leschallas, James Grant and Andrew
Johnston on the birth of sons, to Edward
Llewellyn on his appointment as a Privy
Councillor and we regret to announce the death
of Alexander Moynes.

We have had 17 entries for music exams this term, including Trinity Drum kit and Guitar exams, and we
were very pleased that Hopton ma scored a merit in his grade 8 piano at the end of last term. The Choir
have continued to work hard, singing at every Sunday Chapel service.
Thanks must go to all our peripatetic staff who are such a lovely team of people to work with and give
so much time and effort to encourage the boys. There will be some staff changes this term: we are sad
that Mrs Pakenham (piano and singing) , Mrs Frost (piano) and Mr Bryant (drum kit) are moving to other
posts, and I will be off to pastures new in my new post at a school in Malvern in September. A very big
thank you to all who have supported the work of the Music in the school since I have been here, and to
the boys for their efforts and hard work. It has been a pleasure to be part of Sunningdale, and I have lots
of very fond memories to treasure.

Declamation 2015
We were extremely fortunate this year to have the
finals of the Declamation judged by Mr Barber,
former Headmaster of Ludgrove. It was wonderful
that the boys were able to provide such an
impressive and entertaining evening of memory,
oratory, and performance. Particularly accomplished, I thought, and perhaps unlucky not to claim
first prize, were Davies and Crewe-Read mi who
spoke with real clarity, measure, and variation. But
there was no denying that Jackson ma and Delikatnyi
were worthy winners. Both performed flawlessly,
giving real weight to their readings, especially
Delikatnyi, whose performance of Lord Tennyson's
Ulysses was genuinely electrifying and will go down
as one of the great Declamation performances, and
a measure by which to judge future years.

Art Exhibition
The 'private view' was very well attended and the
parents commented of the variety of the work the
boys had produced. Giant figures inspired by Keith
Haring, one point perspective drawings, clay shoes,
abstract wire sculptures, Picasso bags, Japanese
cherry blossom pictures and monster eyes were
among the exhibits. It was a lovely evening for boys
to show what they had been working on.

Leavers 2015
The Leavers had three weeks packed with activities after Common Entrance. They went to France for a
few days where they enjoyed sand yachting along Omaha Beach. Back in England they had a tour of
Sandhurst Military Academy, jumped on board Concorde at the Brooklands museum, built rafts on
horseshoe lake and competed in a scrap challenge at school resulting in a kart race on Charlie Brown's
field. The leavers supper in the cricket pavilion on the last night of term was spent reminiscing about their
years at Sunningdale and brought tears to many.We will miss them hugely.
