colour)
- Present introductory power point (State
the three higher order questions at the
end. Students to write these down on the
back of their mind map- to maintain
sustainability.

Assess students prior

knowledge. This allows
teachers to see what students
already know and what they
need improvement on (Taylor,
2003)

- Introductory power point

- A4 size piece of paper x23

Jaimee: State the topic and

introduce the group members
Abby: Explain what the
students need to do for the
beginning mind map.
Jaimee Naomi & Abby: Run
through the power point
together (alternating slides)
Naomi- Introduces the three
higher order questions- ask
students to write these down.

Explore

3 different stations- 10 mins each

Station 1- Desalination plant
Station 2- Solar oven
Station 3- Mason Jars/Ice Cubes

Involve the children in handson learning. This will help the

children to remember the
material better (Haury &
Rillero, 2007, p. 4)

-Pizza Boxes x10

Discussion of the questions and answers

from each station.

Whole class discussions show

whether the students have

Three Key Questions (and sample answers):

1. How can you implement solar energy into your life?
- Lighting (indoor & Outdoor)
- Hot Water systems
- Solar chargers (eg for electronics)
- Solar Ovens
- Pools and Spas- run by solar
- Solar Panels on roof (homes, cabins, caravans)
2. What are the advantages and disadvantages of solar energy?
Advantages:
- Solar energy is sustainable
- Solar is a silent producer of energy
- Solar produces zero emissions; this is critical for our health and the earths sustainability for future generations
- Solar energy requires little maintenance; only occasional repairs and maintenance from a qualified professional
- This type of energy is renewable and therefore as a society we will never run out of it
Disadvantages:
- The cost of installing and setting up solar panels can be extremely expensive
- This type of energy cant created during the night
- On cloudy days energy is still produced but the amount is reduced
3. What can Australia do to maximize solar energy and its benefits?
- Lower the cost of installation of solar energy systems
- Encourage the installation of more solar PV systems on Australians rooftops.
