Kelsey Smith Mrs. Patterson Honors Conceptual Physics February 25, 2016 ‘Through this activity, I have leamed that my most powerful muscle groups are my lower body and quadriceps, and my least powerful muscle groups are my arms and shoulders. This may be because I have never focused much on exercising my upper body. I prefer to go on jogs and run laps instead of lifting weights and doing push-ups. Also, [ do not do many activities that require a lot of upper body strength. Because I do not play any sports, I can use this information to help with my personal fitness instead of sports training. I can now focus more on working with my upper body instead of my lower body. When in the weight room during gym class, I ean try to focus on using the machines that will help work out my arms and upper body instead of the ones that work out my legs and lower body. Namex_yote | Sat Date Period: : 23 Muscle Power Lab ~ Data Analysis e 5c7 gate 5 Objective: The student will investigate and compare the amount of power produced by several different muscle groups in their bodies. Directions: We are now ready to analyze your results from the lab in the fitness room. For each muscle group/exercise we are looking to calculate the total work and power used to complete the entire exercise. Things to keep in mind: ‘* Time (t) should be for the entire set or exercise and should be measured in seconds. /t should only include time spent on the upward motion. For some of the exercises, you should estimate this time as one-half of the total time. For other exercises, using the total time makes sense, THINK IT THROUGH! ‘* The dispiacement (d} should be measured in meters and should include the upward motion over the entire set. For most exercises, you need to multiply your vertical distance by the number of repetitions you did, For the Stair Climber, you need to find a way to calculate your total upward displacement. ©The lifting force (F) is equal to the weight of what is being lifted, assuming you kept a fairly constant speed. This weight should be calculated in Newtons by multiplying a mass (in kilograms) by 9.80 m/s*, See a special note about how to find the mass being lifted in bodyweight exercises, Conversions You May Need: 1 1b =0.45 kg, Lin =2.54.cm 1 ft = 0.305 m ‘flight on Stair Climber = 20.5 ft ‘©®SHOW ALL WORK (INCLUDING CONVERSIONS) THROUGHOUT THE ANALYSISI*** Station 1: Leg Extensions - Quadriceps tation 2: Stair Climber — Lower Bod} *Use your full body weight as the weight lifted! weight (N): S95 "4 co weight (N}:1 979914 ie displacement (m): > 4 displacement (m): 16.01 ae time (5): 9°39 ¢ time (5): 8% > Work (J): 419.324 F Work (I): 790% 6943S Power (W}: 945,973 .1 weight (N): 25 displacement (mj: © 2 9.5) time (5): Work (J: | 23496 > Power (W}: 13/4.7 Station weight (N): displacement (m):(2 time (5): 1%, Work (J): ay 5 power (w: Ze Station 4: Sit-Ups ~ Core/Abs *Use 40% of your body weight lifted weight (N): 117 Station 4: Push-Ups ~ Chest, Arms, Should: “Use 66% (full) or 52% (modified) of body weight. weight (N): 2>¢.¢2 N atsplacement ml: Con (g (5 (A) Z- (—)) “WBplacement ims rm 24 ’ ae time (5): Work (I): Text 75 / Power (W): 5 time (5): 15, Work (i): 25 Power (W}: 3097 Essay: Write a 1-2 paragraph essay that you will turn in for both Mr. Hoffmann and Mrs. Patterson detailing the results of your analysis. In the essay, be sure to address the following questions. +L, Which muscles/muscle groups were the most powerful and which were the least powerful? 2. Why do you think certain muscles more powerful than others? (This is open-ended. You may answer from the perspective of anatomy/physiology, fitness, physics...there are many ways of looking at the question.) 3. How do you plan to use what you have learned to influence your fitness/performance goals? For example, will you change the way you play or train for a sport? When you have completed all part of this analysis, you should turn in a packet of 4 pages stapled together! 2 Copies of the Essay + This Page (Analysis) + Data Collection Sheet (in this order) Teacher: dc.
