Philosophy of Teaching

My philosophy of teaching is grounded in open access to learning, respect and

integrity, and excellence toward students. I believe access refers to the right that students
have in receiving a proper education. I have worked with students from a variety of
backgrounds including an inner-city school (Community College of Allegheny College),
suburban schools (e.g., Central Ohio Technical College and Stark State College) as well
as my current position, which extends to both inner city, suburban, and urban-based
students (Northcentral Technical College). In all of these schools, I have noticed that
there are varying beliefs, experiences, and skills among the student population.
I believe in the appreciation of diversity while providing students access to a
proper education is essential. I have seen the struggles among many of my students while
they attend school (e.g. transportation, family, work obligations). School is indeed the
great equalizer of our society. I have a strong belief that the institution of education and
its faculty, staff, and administrators have a moral obligation to help their students, their
community, and our nation.
My philosophy on access and diversity is seen in the variety of learning
modalities my course have offered. Without modalities such as online, hybrid, and other
course offerings, my students may not have had a chance to go to school. My philosophy,
among the importance of diversity, can be seen not only throughout the schools I have
taught at, but my dedicated role as International Club Advisor and the courses I teach that
revolve around diversity (e.g. Social Problems) and throughout my community (Cub
scout Den Leader and Cubmaster).
Respect and integrity are also paramount to my philosophy of teaching. Passing
on these skills is not forced endeavor, but a practice in which I attempt to lead by
example. At NTC, academic integrity and working cooperatively are some of the
measured competencies required by my college. As a Board of Directors member for
Habitat for Humanity, soccer coach at the local YMCA, and faculty member at my
college, I realize that I am responsible for providing respect and integrity to all of those
whom I serve.
Finally, I believe in providing excellence in the field of education. Over the past
several years, I have accomplished many tasks that range from publishing, completing
my doctorate, and being recognized by my college with various awards. I feel that
whatever skills have must flow toward those around me including the community,
students, college, and family.
