Thecentralfocusofthislessonisforstudentstouseanewformofpoetry.
Studentswillcloselyexamineapieceofartworkandthencreateapoembasedontheartwork
theyhaveselected.Studentswillbeabletoexplaintheiranalysisoftheartworkandthe
influencebehindtheirpoems.
A.MAINIDEAS
1) Ekphrasticpoetryispoetrywritteninresponsetoandinspiredbyapieceofartworkor
photograph.
2) Analyzingapieceofartworkrequiresuseofthesameskillswhenanalyzingtext:whoor
whatisshown,whatishappeningthepiece,whatisthemoodoftheartwork,summarize
themainideaofthepiece.
3) Includingimageryinpoetryhelpsthereadervisualizethedescriptionsinthepoem.

:TeacherwilldisseminatelyricstoVincent.Studentswillreadthelyricsas
theylistentoDonMcLeanssong.Whenthesongisfinished,studentswilldiscuss
questionsattheirtablessuchas:
a) WhodoyouthinkVincentwas?WhatdowelearnaboutVincentfromthesong?
b) Whataresomeofthephrasesinthesongthatdescribethepainting?
c) WhatisDonMcLeanssongabout?
StudentswillcometotherealizationthatthesongisaboutVincentVanGogh.Students
willfindexamplesoffigurativelanguageusedinthesongandwillexamineVanGoghs
artworkthatMcLeanreferstoasaclass.
2) GalleryWalk:
Therewillbe10Chromebookssetuparoundtheroom,eachwitha
picturedisplayed.StudentswillparticipateinaGalleryWalk,examineallthepieces
beforeselectingone.Oncestudentsselectapieceofartworkthatintereststhem,theywill
takeobservationnotesonthepieceusingtheObservationWorksheet.
3) Writing:
Oncestudentshaveselectedapieceofartwork,theymaybeginwritingthe
eighthandfinalpoemfortheirportfolio:anekpharsticpoem.Theirpoemmustinclude
imagery,beaboutoneoftheimagestheylookedatinclass,andbeabout1520lines.

H.DIFFERENTIATED/ACCOMMODATIONS
Therearestudentsinthisclasswithclashingpersonalitiesandahistoryofarguments
witheachotherthatexcelledtophysicalaltercations:theywillnotbepartnered.Further,
therearestudentswhoaregoingthroughemotionaltimesonestudentrecentlylosta
parentandtwootherstudentshaveparentsthatareintheprocessofgettingadivorce.I
willmakesuretopartnerthemwithastudentthattheyarefamiliarandcomfortable
with.
