At some bases such as in Trenton, Ont. and Winnipeg, security was beefed up. Soldiers were warned at a number of bases not to weer their uniforms if possible. In other military locations, like Moose Jaw and Edmonton nothing was done. The country's electronic spy agency, the Communications Security Establishment, in Ottawa was in lock-down for six hours. Employees were told they could leave just before 4 p.m, But other Department of National Defence employees and Canadian Forces personnel were still confined to their offices in Ottawa and Gatineau Chief of the Defence Staff Gen. Tom Lawson was in a meeting across the street from where the young soldier was killed by a gunman and had to be hustled to an awaiting armoured vehicle that was rolled up on the Sparks Street mall ‘The Canadian Forces has remained silent about the killing. “t's total chaos,” one military officer told the Citizen. ‘The Wednesday morning shooting of the soldier at the National War Memorial set in motion a major lockdown of National Defence buildings across the city and in Gatineau. Earlier reports that bases across the country were also locked down turned out not to be accurate. Major Gen. Christopher Coates, deputy commander of the Canadian Joint Operations Command (CJOC) said orders went ut to base commanders that they were to take “precautions appropriate to their environments.” Each commander could decide on what precautions to take. 0443549_1-A.2014.01552--0127Shortly after the shooting, Lawson was hustled out of a building on Sparks Street by heavily armed police. But relatives and sources have identified the soldier as Cpl. Nathan Cirillo, The soldier, who was standing on guard at the war memorial, was a reservist from The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders of Canada (Princess Louise's). That unit is based in Hamilton, Ont. Security levels at some bases, such as CFB Trenton, Ont. and Cold Lake, Alta,, were heightened. But at Canadian Forces Base Edmonton, there were no plans to beef up security. “As always, vigilance is the key word here. I'm sure something will be looked at, but as | know, nothing is going on right now.” said CFB Edmonton spokesman Fraser Logan Wednesday morning, “Just like any Canadian citizen, we're all shocked,” he said, “As for anything changing at the base, | don’t know, it’s status quo as it stands.” Logan said they are monitoring reports in Ottawa and are on “standby.” ‘At Moose Jaw, Sask., no extra precautions were put in place. In Halifax, Rear-Admiral John Newton sent out a message, asking military staff “to restrict movement in uniform in public as much as possible.” In Kingston, Ont,, military personnel were also told not to wear uniforms. Lt. Navy Marco Chouinard of the Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu garrison in Quebec said that a directive had gone out instructing any military member not currently on duty to wear civilian clothing if they plan to be out in public on Wednesday. Driving to and from work in uniform is fine, he explained, but a stop at the grocery store or a visit to the gym would necessitate a change. But at 8 Wing at CFB Trenton, military personnel were told not to make unnecessary stops to or from work In some of the military's Ottawa locations, soldiers were told not to wear uniforms to and from work. ‘At 17 Wing in Winnipeg, security was heightened and military members are being told not to wear their uniforms in public, Consideration was also being given to remove social media profiles that would indicate whether a person works for the DND or is a member of the Canadian Forces. The attack also affected activities of young people involved in cadets. The team, based at Dwyer Hill, would be brought if the RCMP or Ottawa police requested their help. DND sources, however, say other elements of the regular Canadian Forces were not involved in the response but are available if civilian authorities request them.
