Getting to Know You Activity:

We will play a game where each of us takes turns
rolling large dice and answering the questions in
game format. (Note: The dice have interest
inventory questions on each side inside plastic
sleeves more than one question may be
under the other in this sleeve)

to the student
(cut out
cards)
Allow use of
manipulatives
whenever
needed

***
Manipulatives
to be made
available to
student:

Do Not use
all of these if
T begins to
get frustrated

Counters
Linking cubes
Blank paper
Pencils/eraser
Blank grids
(10, 100)
Base Ten
blocks
Number tiles

Also:
Cardboard
Coins

2. Solve the following word problems by first

writing the problem numerically (note
carefully the strategies T uses to determine the
method for displaying the problem), and then
solving for the correct answer.

Present each
word problem
separately (do
Not use all of
these if T
begins to get
frustrated).
Read the
problems to
him.

Encourage
him to TALK
OUT LOUD
as he works
through the
process of
writing the
problem
numerically
and solving it.
Encourage
use of
manipulatives
(let him
choose).

3. Identify the coins that will make the amount of

money listed. (Present one prompt at a time).
Allow T to
use the
cardboard
coins if he
wishes.
Do Not use
all of these if
T begins to
get frustrated

4. Present the following 2 digit subtraction

problems individually (either on separate pages
or individual whiteboard). * Note carefully the
strategies T uses (encourage him to talk through
the problems as he works them).

Encourage
use of
manipulatives

5. Present these subtraction fact prompts in

flash card manner.
Tell T he may
pass if he
wishes but
you would
like it if he
gave each one
a try.

Extension:
*** IF T is engaged and not becoming frustrated,
present the following word problem prompts
requiring computations with money individually.
Observe carefully strategies for setting up the
problem as well as solutions.

Encourage
the use of
manipulatives

Encourage T
to talk out
loud as he
works as well

Lesson Closure:
Thank you T for working so hard today. I think
we are going to have a lot of fun learning
together in the next few weeks.
I have a couple of games with me today that we
can use to practice the fun side of math.

Which would you like to try first?
