Sub Category L-3: Pediatric Pain Management

Part L-3-1: Demonstrate knowledge and ability to assess pediatric client for
pain considering:
Age
Behaviors
Cultural influence
Location and intensity
Physiological and psychological factors
Previous medication and effectiveness
Subjective and objective data

In this course I have learnt all the importance behind the knowledge of
understanding the different ways pediatric patients may express pain. I have
also learnt in this course different techniques to identify if my client is
experiencing any pain, the location and the intensity of the pain.

I have learnt about the different facial expressions some pediatric patients
may make due to expressing pain. I have learnt the different tools, such as the
pain scale of faces you use when asking pediatric patients how they are
feeling. Asking children on a scale of 1-10, how much pain are you in?,
does not work because most of them are at the age of not being able to
verbally express themselves, as images of smiley faces and grimacing faces
helps a lot better. I have also learnt about the way a child will suck on their
thumb to express that their in pain or when you touch a certain area of their
body and them making sudden movements of pulling away or their facial
expression changing immediately.

Good: Understands competency in theory, scenarios and nursing practice.

To achieve competency I attend theory class three times a week, and review
my notes at the end of every week. Pediatrics is a complex course and has a
lot of information to be known and in order for me to be able to succeed I
study my notes regularly so I am confident and able to put my knowledge to
use when I have a pediatric client who is experiencing pain in the future.

I will use this learning in my current and future nursing practice by making
sure to study and practice different scenarios my teacher provides for me on
moodle and thoroughly study and become very familiar with the knowledge
behind pediatric nursing so that I can feel comfortable and confident when I
come in contact with patients I will have in the future. By doing so I will be
able to provide not only my patient but also their family with a strong and
healthy nurse-client relationship and understand the different ways to identify
a childs pain no matter what the circumstances may be.
