Professional Growth
Plan
Goal 1: Technology
Having been given the privilege of being able to teach both
Social Studies 20-1 and Legal Studies 30 in a computer lab this
semester, I feel that an appropriate professional goal for this
practicum would be to hone my technological skills and to find
new and useful programs and technologies that will aid in
student learning. In my experience in practicums so far,
technologies can be both a blessing and a curse, so I want to
find as well as master software and programs that allow me to
get students involved in the use of technology as well as use
technology myself in innovative and efective ways. I would also
like to explore technologies, which prevent students from being
distracted by the many temptations that are made available
with in class computers. In order to reach my goal, I will actively
reflect on how students will be using computers each lesson,
and how I, as a facilitator will make sure that students are
staying on task and learning as much as possible with the help
of an array of diferent applications and programs.

Reflections
I chose this goal because I taught both Social Studies and Legal
Studies in a computer lab. This gave me an opportunity to
develop higher level thinking through a variety of diferent
computer programs. The primary technology that I used was
Desire2Learn, which allows students to access and submit
assignments, receive continuous feedback, engage in
discussions, take quizzes and more. I have really enjoyed using
D2L because it has allowed for continuous feedback between
students and myself as well as makes students more
responsible for their own learning. I also used other technologies

such as Poll Everywhere, Google Docs, and Google forms. I liked

using these programs to encourage collaborative, interactive
assignments and discussions among students. I also used a
program called Net Share, which allowed me to monitor student
computer use as well as share my screen and communicate with
students as a class or individually. This program became of
particular use because I found that a computer lab adds a high
level of distraction for the students. I found that many students
began to abuse the privilege of computer access and being able
to control or block students from specific programs or sites was
very useful in terms of classroom management. Overall I
learned a lot more about the educational uses of technology in
the classroom than I knew before my practicum at Diefenbaker.

Goal 2: Classroom Management

This semester I have a very diverse group of learners in the
Legal Studies 30 class that I am teaching. This class includes
students who have had severe attendance issues throughout
their high school careers as well as moderate to severe
behavioural problems and lack of interest in school. On the flip
side, I have IB students in the course as well who want to learn
as much as they can who shouldnt be distraction by the other
students in the class. In order to find a classroom management
plan that is efective, I plan on trying a variety of diferent
strategies to see which will prove to be most efective. Teaching
in a computer lab lends the extra challenge of having students
who are distracted and doing things they shouldnt be doing
during class time. The lay out of the computer lab also poses a

challenge, as there are many blank spots that allow students to

hide if not monitored extensively. I intend on trying a diferent
strategy each class until I find a strategy that is efective in
assuring an optimal learning environment for each and every
student in the class so that they may obtain high marks and full
credits for the course.

I feel that I have worked hard to complete this goal, and that I
will continue to work on this goal throughout the years as I gain
more experience in a variety of diferent classrooms. My Legal
Studies class proved to be a challenge for me in terms of
classroom management. There are many reluctant and
disengaged learners in this class who gave me ample
opportunities to try a variety of diferent management
techniques. With this class I learned the importance of being
friendly yet firm and at which times to apply which approach. I
feel that the benefit of being a young teacher in high school is
that it gives an opportunity to readily relate to students. I have
used this to my advantage to earn respect and cooperation from
students, but have also learned that this can lead to students
taking advantage of that kindness. This is where I have learned
the balance between firm and friendly and how using the
balance efectively contributes to a classroom where all variety
