The City of Peterborough has designated a

number of properties adjacent to the Study
Area. Only one property in the Study Area is
being advanced by the City, 413 Bethune
Street. Its character contributions are style,
scale and being a good example of the
workers cottage.

The Central Area Master Plan is to use Bethune Street

to link the TCT to the Crawford Trail. Bethune Street is
the key to creating a truly city-wide trail and cycling
network in Peterborough. Together with Townsend
Street, at least 7 existing or future cycling facilities will
be connected.

Provide pedestrian friendly intersections, and create an

ambiance conducive to people walking, or using mobility
aids, including resting points, accessible pedestrian signals,
tactile walking surfaces, shade and landscaping

Issues and Opportunities Map:

Low Impact Development, Green Infrastructure, Complete Streets and Livability
Trenchless Construction of 900mm TSS under Jackson
Creek and the Bethune St bridge

Early utility / services relocation in advance of Culvert /

TSS construction key project objective

Incorporate green infrastructure into the corridor, as well as various

approaches to localized stormwater treatment/management
Maximize creative placemaking,
integrating public art and ongoing
community programs that foster
creativity .

Outlet Structures to be physically modeled to confirm capacity. Conflict

with hydro poles and u/g utilities to be investigated.
Use the corridor to create equitable
access to landscapes and nature as
part of everyday life.

Opportunities for traffic diversions

Level Crossing Warning Signal /

Traffic Signal Inter-connection
needs to be investigated
Physical modeling of inlet structure to
confirm capture capacity. Inlet grating to
address capacity & public safety needs

Existing and new infrastructure

should be optimized for LID and
passive management in order to
optimize urban resiliency

Bethune Street must become a

friendlier zone to spend time or to
pass through

Opportunities for traffic diversions

Managing existing sanitary loadings and water

demands during construction of new services is a key
project objective
Gateway treatment at
Charlotte & Park Streets

Explore the concept of Living

Streets (as in living roomthe
shared space to gather and/or quietly
watch the world go by)

Trenchless Construction of 3m x 1.8m Box Culvert

under CPR Tracks
Consider the Stewart Street A.N.C.
project and integrate the community
voice in project planning.

Investigate improved cycling

connection along Townsend as
part of revamped streetscape

Use infrastructure to recall the

lost ecology through rains
gardens and other GI
measures, like porous paving.

Gateway treatment from

future southern trails

Effective traffic diversion can keep the

street narrow and provide space for
improved landscaping and amenities
