Make a Change
If you see yourself working with people of all ages, to help them over
come obstacles in life, psychology is definitely a major for you. Psychology is
a major, which allows you to develop good communications skills, behavioral
skills, and good observational skills. And to be quiet honest I believe
everyone should have knowledge of all these skills, because they are very
important especially in an environment such as work.

There are many

reasons why you should major in psychology. One theres numerous careers
you can choose from. Two there are high graduation rates in the department
of psychology. And lastly you are helping people and making a change in
society.
People always ask me, Why did you choose to major in psychology?.
And I think to myself thats a great question. Why did I? I personally chose to
major in psychology because I feel that there are many people in this world
that need help expressing themselves but most importantly there are so
many kids that need help expressing their own voice. Ive had personally
talks with many people who have majored and graduated with a bachelors
in psychology. And what caught my attention was that all of these people
said that majoring in psychology introduced them to many other people. And
meeting new people opened the doors to many careers in the field of
psychology for them.
Stephanie Ortega is a CSUN graduate of 2015, with a bachelors in
psychology, and shes currently working as a therapist for children with

special disorders. Stephanie Ortega told me that majoring in psychology has

allowed her to develop so many amazing skills that has not only helped her
at work but also in her everyday life. One of these skills she has developed
is, being able to handle situations under pressure very well. Stephanie is
such a strong independent young lady and majoring in psychology has
helped become the woman she is today. Stephanie Ortega was cleared from
her cancer in the year of 2014, and she said, Majoring in psychology really
helped me keep calm when things got difficult. Her mother and father were
struggling emotionally with her sickness, but her way of communicating and
dealing with stress helped her parents remain clam as well. Psychology can
contribute to your life in many ways, ways in which you wouldnt imagine.
Never in my life did I think I would be diagnosed with cancer, and never in
my life would I think majoring in psychology have helped me get through it,
said Stephanie Ortega.
Predicting and understanding the behavior of others, have insight of
problematic behaviors, adapting to change, and showing persistence in
challenging situations are all skills that you intake when majoring in
psychology (Whitbourne, 2012).

These are other reasons why you should

want to major in psychology. For example, when your sensitive girlfriend is

having a rough day but she doesnt want to tell youthese skills will give
you enough knowledge to understand the way shes acting whether its in
her voice, body language, or the way shes acting towards you. Skills like
these can also help you remain calm in certain situations for example, when

your family is going through a rough patch, financially, emotionally, or a

relative is really sick, you will be the rock in your family. What I mean be rock
is that you are going to be the person that keeps your family grounded, that
gives them that positive energy, and most importantly that support they
need.
When you think of psychology Im sure you only thing of therapist,
school counselor, psychologist etc., well theres way much more. There are
increasing opportunities in business, education, and health care for
Bachelors-level psychologists (Csun). There are so many different branches
that psychology is connected to. Majoring in psychology can lead to go in any
direction you choose, whether its working with kids or working with forensic
science (career in psychology).

There are opportunities everywhere for

psychology majors, and the best part is that they all are helping people
become better and grow as a person.
Helping people is everything, especially when majoring in psychology.
But lets be realistic its nice having a job in which you will be able to be
dependent and at the same time be able to treat yourself now and then.
Psychology has a bad reputation for being a low income job. Before anything
can I just say money is a bonus, it should never be a reason why you choose
a major. Child psychiatrist make an average of $189,301, Engineering
Psychologist $108,348, Forensic Psychologist $117,470, and off course if your
another Dr. Phil $80 million (Voakes, 2011). A psychology degree can lead to

many rewarding careers for people who want to do something that with have
a positive impact (and possibly ripple effect) on others, said Greg Voakes.
For myself I truly want to make a positive impact on children. Children
deserve to grow up in a safe happy environment, with a loving family.
Unfortunately, many kids around the world dont have that. I wish there was
more of me to be all around the world in order to be helping these kids, but
theres not. There is a start to change though, and a start to helping kids in
need is majoring in psychology. Working as a child psychiatrist or social
workers allows us to show our well-learned skills to help these kids and give
them the happy well-deserved childhood they need. Child welfare social
work is a field of social work that involves making sure childrens needs are
taken care of. First and foremost, professionals in this field keep the best
interests of all children in mind. They work hard to protect them from
deplorable situations and make sure that their needs are met (careers in
psychology). Our future depends on the next generation, and majoring in
psychology can open doors for us to make sure the upcoming generations
are getting a warm home with loving people that will put their needs before
anyone elses. Change starts somewhere and we can be the start.
Social sciences and history made up the third largest area, with a total
of 177,800 degrees. Of those social science degrees, a total of 114,400 were
in psychology (Cherry, 2016). Believe me you wont be the only one to
choose the major of psychology. Like stated above psychology is one of the
greatest major to get chosen. And theres no twist to it, psychology has

branches everywhere and Im sure one of those branches will definitely

interest you.
Like all other majors, psychology does require hard work and
dedication. But I can assure you that majority of the classes are not boring,
and will intrigue you. Most of these courses are about how the brain works,
how humans react in certain situations, its all about learning how our mind
controls our actions and bodies. You learn and increase your knowledge
about humans, and wow would you look at that you are human too.
Psychology isnt only beneficial to help others but you can take a lot from it.
Skills, language, and emotions are things you will take with you when
majoring in psychology, things that will be beneficial for yourself.
Psychology is a great major for you. It benefits you and others. You will
be the start of change in society. We are all citizens that should contribute
into society and what better way to do that by getting an education in
psychology. While getting this education you will grow as a person. You will
need a total of 120 units to earn your bachelors in psychology. These 120
units are definitely a way in which you can finish college in a plan of 4 years.
After these four years you can choose the branch in which you want to take
and go on and make your change in society. Come on, make the right choice
and take the psychology path!!
