Lesson Topic: Measurement and Data
Grade: 3
Standards: 3.MD. Solve problems involving measurement and estimation of intervals of
time, liquid volumes, and masses of objects. Represent and interpret data.

Anticipatory
Students will be introduced to different types of measuring units,

starting with the standard 12-inch ruler, a 3 foot measuring tape, and a
yard stick.
Objective /
Purpose

Students will be able to pick the best answer by estimating the size of a
known object, such as whistles, white boards, and notebooks, by
having an understanding of measurements. Students will be able to
understand base 60 units such as that in time.

Instructional
Input

Teacher will demonstrate how one 12-inch ruler is equal to 1 foot,


how 3 feet is equal to 1 yard.

Modeling

Teacher and students will measure random objects to get a better


understanding of the correlation between objects and the best
measurements. For example, they will understand the length of a
notebook will be under a foot and not a yard.

Checking for
Understanding

Teacher will randomly quiz students to see if they understand the


units of measurement, conversion, and time units. Liquid volumes and
masses of objects will be done the next day.

Guided
Practice

Teacher will say out objects, such as a whistle, a pencil, etc. (objects
students know) to check students understand the approximation of
measurement with known objects.

Independent
Practice

Students will do worksheet that has pictures of objects and students


will approximate the best measurement.
