LESSON PLAN

2nd Grade
SONIA FLORES

STANDARD
L.1.1,6 Expanding 6. Connecting ideas

Combine clauses in an increasing

variety of ways to make connections
between and to join ideas, for
example, to express cause/effect (e.g.,
She jumped because the dog barked.),
in shared language activities guided
by the teacher and with increasing
independence.

ENGAGEMENT (Motivational Activity):

Today we are going to look at some

pictures of different types of

weather. I would like you to think
like a scientist or meteorologist (an
expert on weather forecasting) and
describe what you see. What does
the forecast (weather) look like
today? What are some effects of
different types of weather?

Objective:
By the end of our lesson,

students will be able to identify

the causes and effects of
different types of weather, as
well as define the terms by
creating their own examples
and participating in a class
discussion.

INSTRUCTIONAL SEQUENCE: REVIEW

KEY TERMS

a. T model: give visuals to all students, visuals

include weather chart with pictures of different
types of weather. Reinforcement would follow a
forecast video of different types of weather.
b. Student response: Check for understanding:
active participation: think pair share

Cause and effect sentence

strips:
a. T model: have four examples of cause and

effect with sentence strips. Examples include

rain, snow, warm/hot, and windy. The sentence
strips of causes will remain in order;
however the effects will be scrambled.
Cause and effect sentence strips will be
introduced in a day; however, reinforcement
will be ongoing throughout the week.
b. Student response: Students work as a
class to unscramble the effects and match
them with the correlated causes

APPLICATIOLN ACTIVITY
(Practice): Cause and effect
foldable
Students will work in pairs (ELs will be paired with native

speaking students)
Students be give an 8 by 11 white construction paper. The
paper will be pre-folded by the teacher, with dotted lines
where students should cut.
There will be three tabs in which students can write their
own cause and effect examples with regard to weather and
meteorology.
After writing their examples, students can draw pictures to go
along with their sentences.
ELL students will be given a worksheet with the terms and
examples listed as a tool for scaffolding.
Once all students are complete with their cause and effect
foldable, they will go around the classroom and share/review
them with other classmates.

Follow-Up: Homework
assignment
Students will be given a weather

tracker log. Students will be

responsible for writing the type of
weather daily. In addition, they will
draw a corresponding picture and
write a cause and effect sentence.
(i.e. I wore boots on Monday, because
it was raining.)
Students will complete their weather
logs for one month.

Assessment:
Formative Assessment: When students are

working on their foldable in class, teacher will

circulate around the classroom, and check in
with students.
If students need extra support, the teacher will
re-teach areas that students struggle with at
their desk.
Summative Assessment: After students
complete their foldables and share them
around the classroom, teach will close the
lesson by asking students what cause and
effect is. Students may also share their cause
and effect examples from their foldable aloud.
