Community Discourse Map

In a community discourse map, the most important things in a persons life are displayed
around. Then those things are broken down into smaller parts of that idea which explain what
that main idea consists of. In my personal community discourse map, the four discourse
communities I chose were school, work, Facebook, and family. For each idea I chose three
characteristics which were the goals, audience, and vocabulary used in each one of them.
My first discourse community I talked about was school. I attend UTEP three days a
week so that forms a very important part of my map. The first characteristic I included was the
goals which are to be on time, learn, and of course graduate. For the second characteristic
which was the audience, I put down the professors and the students. And lastly the vocabulary
used which are miners, study, and homework. This was my school discourse community.
My second discourse community was work. I work at Your Precious Kids Daycare
during the week so it also forms a really important part of my map. For the first characteristic,
the goals, I wrote that our goal is to help kids learn and grow, but most important gain
experience ourselves. For the audience I put down the kids enrolled in the daycare and the
staff. And for the vocabulary used it is of course typical daycare phrases like, Nap time or
Time for snack.
My third discourse community was Facebook. For the first characteristic, the goals I
wrote down were for people to socialize with friends and/or other people and with the audience
being Facebook users and whoever chooses to create an account. The vocabulary used is

Like Comment and Share. This discourse community is very important for me too because I
utilize it on a daily basis.
My last discourse community was family. This was of course the most important of all
because family will continue being in my life even after all the other discourse communities I
mentioned disappear. For the goals I wrote down that families should grow together and see for
each other always. The audience is of course parents, siblings, aunts/uncles, and grandparents.
The vocabulary used is mom dad and the most important one of all love.
The way a community discourse map is structured is to show others what the main ideas
of what someones life consists of and the different characteristics that come along with them. In
my map I chose to write about the ideas of school, work, Facebook, and family. Along with that, I
wrote about the characteristics of each which included the goals, audience and vocabulary used
for each of the ideas.
