Dear professor,
As the semester almost reached its end, my composition process for this last assignment
was significantly influenced by a lot of what was covered in class. Choosing my topic brought up
a first dilemma: writing a resume or a statement of purpose. In fact, I knew both genres would
definitely be useful to me in the future. However, I opted for a statement of purpose since it is
one of the hardest documents I will ever have to write, so I thought I would try to get a little
ahead. Through this letter, I am seeking to present exactly how some of the concepts covered in
class were useful in completing this project.
A statement of purpose is a very important document needed to apply for graduate
school. Since such a document typically involves senior undergraduate students, I decided to
foresee myself two years from now. The goal was to create a better writing context and have a
paper that looked as similar as possible to what it was supposed to. Georgia institute of
Technology is the University I am applying to. This is mainly because of its various research
centers that appeal to what I am wanting to work on for my PhD degree. My audience is the
Universitys admission committee.
Completing this project required me to apply some of the concepts we have been
discussing over the course of the semester. First of all, audience profiling was my first step. It
involves knowing and targeting my audience in order to successfully reach them. For such a
prestigious University as Georgia institute of technology, I realized the admission committee
must be both overwhelmed and selective. This is due to the huge amount of applications they
receive every semester. As a result, I devoted a lot of time in writing my papers hook in order to
guarantee I get my readers attention. Moreover, I realized the importance of proof reading,
which ensured that my paper was free of all typos. Applying this concept also made me focus
more on my papers persuasive nature. This relates to the next concept that impacted my
document. The persuasive style involves convincing an audience through opinions, reasons,
arguments, and biases of the author. Therefore, as I am trying to convince the admission of my
passion in the field and specific interest in the program, I made my paper of a more persuasive
style. This involved a careful structure and an effective use of literary devices. In fact, every
single of my statements had a deep persuasive nature. Regarding the format, a quick google

search equipped me with the right structure and document organization. This comprised a hook,
a succession of paragraphs each carrying a specific idea, and a conclusion. Last, a concept I
greatly considered was my professional ethos. Ethos is known as the degree of credibility that an
author achieves in a document. Regarding this last concept, when writing my statement of
purpose, I realized the need to share life situations reflecting my true passion and interest in the
field of Electrical Engineering. I think that helped me build a stronger credibility for audience.
Overall, I believe all that was learned in class can really be applied in future technical
or professional documents. More specifically, this assignment happened to be an effective tool in
demonstrating our degree of understanding of all the concepts covered throughout this semester.
As this semester is almost over, I feel glad for all the work accomplished as well as for the
material covered.
Sincerely,

Loic Djamen
